[Pro] FTP & Accounts

Although the NAS connectivity is less than perfect the ability to
connect to it via FTP makes it ideal for allowing users direct access
to storage without letting them close to production machines.

That’s a big +1 from me, both for the ease of use and for the security aspects. These things are designed for this task and pretty much only this task. You could set it up for FTP and/or access using standard Mac/Windows file sharing across the network, using a simple interface that is meant for just this task. I use a NAS for my music storage and another for my photo storage.

(I would use an Xserve RAID that I was given (!) recently, but I don’t have the required copper-to-optical adaptor or copper-only cable & PCI card to set it up. Anyone want to buy a 1TB+ RAID 5 (current setup) Xserve RAID? Be warned: it is heavy…)

These are so very great (in both senses of that word). I would have a
quick scour on eBay for the card + cable. Much cheaper than shipping
the RAID to its new home.

I got two hits on the search term ‘M9274G/C’ which is the model number
for the card you want here in the US. $125-129.99, both with Buy it
Now since I know you really want to use this thing today!

On the other hand, it is very loud in close quarters. Mine is in the
basement, where it bothers nobody (and keeps relatively cool in the
summer).
