[Pro] FWP 6.0.2 Master Page Link Problems?

I’m getting some strange behavior with FWP 6.0.2 and Master Page links. I’m attempting to change the Footer Section link options in my Master Page.

However, when I do so the links on each Site Page connected to the Master Page will only update the Hover option. The Normal, Visited, and Active setting are still retained from the Page settings of the Master Page.

In addition, I’ve noticed that FWP 6 will sometimes change the name of my footer section, which is “footer” to “item1”, “item2”, or something similar when I make some changes within the Master. Plus, when the name change occurs, I am unable to permanently select, “User Master Settings” in these pages.

Has anyone else seen this kind of behavior?

Oops! My mistake. I discovered that NONE of the Page Link Options are overridden by selecting link options in a container section within the Master Page.

Also, if I select “User Master Setting” in one of my Site Pages, whose footer section has been renamed, the footer section will revert back to the Master Page section name (footer) but the check box won’t stay selected.

Any thoughts on this?

Joe/Simon, please let me know if this is a known big you’re working on so I don’t waste a lot of time trying to fix something that I cannot.

I did as well. It’s really a shame because that’s a really nice feature–if it worked. :frowning:

I wonder if Joe from Softpress will let me bill him for all the extra time this website is taking me with FWP 6? LOL

I wouldn’t flog Joe or the SP minions too much… we’d like them to keep
working on making things better.

I agree. I’m just a little frustrated. That’s when my inner voice comes out. I usually do a pretty good job of suppressing him.

Can’t wait for 6.0.3.

Hi. After a long layoff, I’ve just this week returned to FWP 7 and find I am having to relearn several aspects of basic web creation.

My current problem is that I have made a Master page with just a logo and some welcome text and 4 links. I named it ‘Home’. I then added 3 further pages which had all the same content as the master page. i then deleted everything from the three pages, leaving just the stuff I wanted from the Home page. I labelled these pages so they were easily identifiable.

When setting up the internal links I am offered the 3 pages but not the Home (master) page. When I Preview in Browser the master page does not show and of course there is no link to it.

Hope all this makes sense. What am I missing folks. I’m sure to kick myself when someone tells me.

Thanks

John B

You cannot link to a Master - only to a Child created from a Master.

Thanks Dave. I really appreciate your taking the time to help me and many others in the forum. I’m definitely getting too old (79) to take in all of this stuff.

Another link problem. I have a folder called puzzle-no_-1 containing a few files, including an .HTML file of the same name that I want to access via a hyperlink from one of my pages. I have inserted the folder inside the resources folder and my external link is
file://resources/puzzle-no_-1/puzzle-no_-1.html

When I run it Safari reports there is no such file at the location.

I’ve had no such problem before. What am I doing wrong please?

While I’m on, does anyone know where I can purchase a decent hard copy of ‘Using Freeway’?

Regards

John B

I have inserted the folder inside the Resources folder

If you are referring to the FW created Resources folder then you shouldn’t be adding anything in there. FW manages all files within the Resources folder and does not recognise anything added externally.

A sub folder will show up in your Site Panel (Left Side of FW’s document display window) and should be added by Right Clicking the Site Folder header and choosing New Folder. Have you created this sub folder as part of another FW document?

my external link is file://resources/puzzle-no_-1/puzzle-no_-1.html

Just to expand on this

The correct link would be file://Resources/puzzle-no_-1/puzzle-no_-1.html note the Capital R on Resources however just because you have placed a folder within the Resources folder does not mean that FW will upload it with the rest of the files that are in there. FW will ignore any files added externally ie not using FW itself or an action.

Also an external link such as file://resources/puzzle-no_-1/puzzle-no_-1.html will not work online anyway.

Can you expand on exactly what you have done/are trying to do and how you have added/created the Folder puzzle-no_-1 and its contents.

More information will better help us to help you.

Thanks Dave. The website I am trying to build is a puzzles website and I wish to offer crossword puzzles which can be tackled online. I have an app which allows me to design my own crosswords and then export them to my website for this purpose.

The export comprises 3 files inside a folder which has to be copied to my FW site under construction. I then have to provide a link from elsewhere to activate the export. No matter where I place the folder containing the crossword export, when I ‘Preview in Browser’, Safari reports that the file does not exist.

I know the export works as it has been tried in another website, so I guess I am missing something obvious.

Rather than try and do the Export on your Mac Export the folders and upload them to your server using an FTP app such as Transmit or Cyberduck amking sure that the folders have an unique name not the same as any of your existing sub folders within FW.

Once the files/folders are uploaded then create your links within FW using the External Tab of the Hyperlink Dialogue box.

Use the full url to the file/folder ie http://www.yoursite/puzzle-no_-1/puzzle-no_-1.html

That should work for you.

If you are still having issues setting up your links than let us know once you have uploaded the puzzle folders and we can help more.

Thanks Dave. I was rather hoping to be able to fully test the export before I went to the expense of purchasing a domain and a hosting service but I guess that will not be possible. I also wanted to create several more puzzles before going live.

I know it works on a live site as I used to add a puzzle to a golf club site I used to maintain.

Thanks again.

You certainly can - all you actually need to do to see if the file works is to use Safari and use File >Open File to navigate through the finder to your puzzle-no_-1.html page.

Besides Hosting/Domain names are cheap $12 for a .com and $4 p/m hosting with GoDaddy - not that I advocate you necessarily use them. But if you aren’t will ing to invest $20 what are you doing?

I have every intention of registering a domain and getting a hosting service, just hadn’t planned on doing it until the site was in decent shape.

Thanks again for your help. Doubtless I’ll be back for more before I’m finished.

As I said you can preview the Exported puzzle files by using Safari’s File > Open File dialogue

Or simply drop the puzzle-no_-1.html document onto the Safari Dock icon
