[Pro] Gmail account website

Hi - forgive my total ignorance but I have a friend who’d like me to knock up a small website for them… they have a gmail account for mail can I use that, in some way, to host their website ? Sorry for what is probably a dumb question. Have good weekends Roger

Hi Roger,
Not really, no. Gmail will give you a certain amount of free storage
for your emails and there are tricks and tools to help you use that
space as a generic online storage space (How to Turn Gmail into an Online Storage - Hongkiat
for example) but it won’t give you a public facing space that you
can park a web page.

You can sign up for a free Dropbox account (http://www.dropbox.com)
which will give you 2GBs of storage and a public folder that you can
add your Freeway generated site to quite easily. Like this;
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1945110/Site%20Folder/index.html
The downside here is that URL. It is less than user-friendly.

Personally I would invest in a domain name and some cheap web hosting
and do this properly. There are a number of Freeway-friendly web hosts
on FreewayTalk and any one of them will give you a great start with
this site.
Regards,
Tim.

Thanks Tim for your really comprehensive response - so good of you.

I actually have an excellent arrangement with ‘Ineedwebhosting’ but didn’t want to set my pal up on there for him to turn round and say it could have been set up with his gmail account - I can now go ahead with a clear conscience … Roger
