[Pro] Google Webfonts?

If I’m using Google Webfonts in a site, are those fonts visible using Preview or does the site have to be live?

As long as you have used a complete URL to link to them, not a scheme-less URL (one that starts with a double-slash, rather than http or https) then they will just work, same as anything else you link to (Prototype and Scriptaculous, for example). You will naturally not be able to view them if you are off-line, though.

Yeah, I had a few things wrong. Thanks Walter.

BTW, I’ve found that the best way to use Google Fonts, for me, is with Suitcase Fusion 5, which downloads ALL of the Google fonts and makes them readily accessible through Suitcase.

The ONLY problem I’ve found is that whenever I activate a new font, and unlike the Adobe apps, FWP doesn’t recognize it unless I restart FWP. Is there a work-a-round for that?

No. This is a problem that goes all the way back to Freeway 1, it’s never been fixed.

Skyfonts, which is free, allows you to download and install the Google
fonts as well.

Preview should work whether fonts are local or not, as long as the Google
code was correctly placed in FWP. Here is my mostly finished tutorial on
how to use Google fonts in Freeway Pro -

Thanks Ernie. Your tutorial is what I used. Thanks for creating that.

I tried Skyfonts, but in the end, and since I already have Suitcase Fusion 5, I decide to use that instead. It’s dead easy to use, plus I can preview the fonts in Suitcase, which makes things so much easier.

Yeah - I use Monotype’s FontExplorer X but am loathe to upgrade it yet. I
add the Skyfont managed files to FEX and basically get the same thing.
Potato, potahto.

You should be seeing them in FWP’s local preview though.

You will, but only after you quit and restart Freeway. It cannot dynamically manage its list of fonts. There used to be a very good reason for this (cough, QuickDraw GX, cough) but I don’t know what the current excuse is.

Walter, I think that’s true as far as the FWP pasteboard view is concerned,
but for browsers - even locally previewed pages should be drawing the fonts
based on the Google font code, not on what the system itself (or FWP) can
provide.

At least that’s been my experience with it. Typekit and some others require
uploading to a web server before they draw the font, but not the Google.

You are probably right. I haven’t tested this, and I was thinking primarily of the design view, not the preview or a browser.

If you’re looking in a browser, or in Freeway’s preview, and you have properly linked to the Google Web font URL, then you should see the font precisely because it is being pulled from the 'net. I just tested this with Protaculous 2, and Freeway’s preview mode properly pulls in Prototype.js and does things with it there. Fonts would be exactly the same, unless you were dealing with Fonts.com and their per-host access restrictions because of licensing requirements.
