[Pro] Hard Drive Upgrade-5400 RPM vs 7200 RPM?

I’m quickly running out of space on my 2012 MacBook Pro internal hard drive. I currently have the stock Apple 500GB, 5400 RPM drive. Not sure of the cache size.

I’m considering an HGST TravelStar 1TB drive with a 32MB Cache that runs at 7200 RPM.

Has anyone upgraded their laptop from a 5400 RPM drive to a 7200 RPM drive? I’m concerned about heat, noise, battery life, etc.?

I’m pretty sure the drive I had in my 2009 MBP was a 7200. No problems with the issues you mention, though it was having intermittent reliability issues and I’ve recently replaced it with a 500 GB SSD, which I really love.

I’m jealous. I just upgraded one of my MacBook drive bays to 256GB Samsung 840 Pro, which I also love, but it’s only 256GB. I’m putting the 1TB drive in the second bay.

Have you enabled TRIM on your SSD? I’m told it really helps with performance.

I installed a Seagate Momentus 7200.5 750GB in my Mac mini and it makes no
apparent noise.

Just ordered a Travelstar. I’ve had a LOT of success with the Deskstars in my server, so I figured I’d stick with the same brand and up the speed to 7200 RPMs. Thanks for everyone’s help.

I haven’t done anything except format, clone, and install.
