Hi Everyone,
I was surprised as many of your were about the shuttering of Softpress a few weeks ago. (no email for me!)
Anyway I’m contemplating my next move and seem pretty happy messing around with Wix.
My question is how long will I be able to continue using Freeway? (Sorry if someone has already answered this.)
Will it work until the next Mac OS update? Is the clock ticking? A rough I idea of a timeline would help me gain some insight on how fast I have to move.
Thanks,
Rich

There has been some unofficial talk that FW7 will continue to work in Mac OS Sierra. Beyond that, I don’t think anyone knows. As long as you don’t update your OS there is no limit to how long you could continue to use it to revise older sites that are not candidates for a complete redesign.

A Mac software professional friend of mine advised me that installing Virtual Machine on one’s Mac will solve the problem for as long as you want. It will set apart a portion of your Mac with whatever OS you choose for the Virtual Machine and your Freeway files. So even if you move on into multiple Mac OS upgrades for that Mac, you can still enter that Mac’s Virtual Machine and use Freeway under the system you chose when you installed the Virtual Machine.

It depends on what your needs are. If you’re making money designing sites for clients, long term you need to find a solution that is moving forward. Freeway has been falling behind for years. If you have small personal site that you just need to tweak now and again, you can probably keep the wheels on your old copy of Freeway for a while to come yet.

The other nice thing is that if you upgrade your hardware, a VM can help you install an OS that is older than the hardware. Apple has a software lock in the OS that prevents you from installing or running any OS older than the machine. It’s their way of ensuring that the combination of OS and hardware is testable.

Imagine trying to run a sufficiently old OS on a modern hardware – you could get into a space where you’re trying to run 68000-era or PowerPC-era code on an Intel Mac. BTW – a regular VM like VirtualBox can’t even do what I’m proposing here, for that you would need something that could cross-compile, like the old VMs that allowed you to run Intel code on PowerPC hardware. That is really really slow, too.

An El Capitan Parallels VM means I can still use FW7 in future versions of macOS, presumably for as long as needed.
Having said that, I am migrating some of my sites to Rapidweaver, so my old FW sites will just be maintained in a VM if clients need an small update. I won’t be developing any new ones in FW, however.

Andries - when posting at FWT the email address gets obfuscated.
Can you share it with us so that anyone can take advantage of the 15% discount offer.
