I believe that the license allows you to install it on more than one computer at a time, however it is a personal license: you may only use one instance of that license at a time. I have it on my laptop and my desktop, and if I forget and leave one open, the other will not launch.

So… its only possible to lunch it on 1 computer at a time with 1 serial, but there is no limit of number of computer using 1 license.

As long as only one of them try to use it at the same time.

Our license says:

(a) Installation and Use. Softpress grants you the right to install and
use the Software on a single computer, or on a desktop and portable as
long as the software is for the exclusive use of the owner and only one
machine may be running the software at any one time.

How does it do that?

If they share a network connection via Ethernet or Airport (wireless) then each is aware of the other running App.

One thing to remember, you can install it on all “YOUR” computers but
you can only run it on one computer at a time. Your girlfriend or your
schoolmates can not use it at the same time on another computer.
Anytime two computers are running your “One” license at the same time
would be considered theft.

Just like downloading music without paying for it, unless the artist
has made it available for free is also theft.

This ability to check that the software is running on a second computer seems to be particular to FW and then only on a network. Is has yet to apply to any of my other software.

But it is not foolproof… some times it happily runs in tandem on my laptop and my desktop and on other occasions tells me it it can not open as it in use elsewhere- surprisingly even when I have quit FW and the the other machine is dormant! This gives me the opportunity to practice my French swearing whilst I do a couple of restarts!.

I would love it if it could be otherwise as there are many occasions when I want to see, say, different projects, or stages of one project on two screens. This seems reasonable to me, being one man operating two computers side by side on the same network.

I use Dropbox for current projects and fear opening up a project at a client’s place of work on my lap top might give me this no-can-do message should I have forgotten to shut down the desktop before leaving home. But if it is away from my network I should not be concerned? Surely this can not be construed as theft?

That must be somewhat limited software list. Adobe does this with
Photoshop and more, Apple does this with Final Cut Pro, Aperture,
Logic…
Several others do this as well.

As studiodave says, it’s fairly common. MS Office also does the same.

You could disconnect one from the network.

I use Dropbox for current projects and fear opening up a project at a
client’s place of work on my lap top might give me this no-can-do message
should I have forgotten to shut down the desktop before leaving home.

It wouldn’t be an issue as the two copies would be running on different
networks.

But if it is away from my network I should not be concerned? Surely this
can not be construed as theft?

I doubt it would be classed as theft in any circumstances (“A person is
guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another
with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it.”) Maybe a
breach of contract under civil law (I’m guessing, though).

Not that I’d want to encourage anyone to defraud Softpress, of course! I’m
sure if you act fairly and reasonably they’ll be happy.

Limited maybe and old. Also I have not put much on my lap top as yet But Illustrator CS3 works on both. I bought Adobe Lightroom 3 this year and that also opens up on both.

Thanks Roger - reassuring. I guess I am unaware of these other apps behaving in a similar manner. My photoshop CS is even older than the my illustrator CS3 and they both soldier on. Don’t use MS Office but apple iWork 09 and that has never baulked. I suppose as I upgrade I will begin to see this happening more.
Best wishes Richard

Anyone coming up during the early '90s in desktop publishing will
recognize this behavior as being standard and expected among all of
the (rather expensive) applications of that day. Freeway’s behavior is
identical to QuarkXPress, circa version 2.1 or so (first version I
ever used in anger, came on startlingly few floppy disks).

For a more modern implementation of this behavior, look at any of the
Omni Group’s applications. They share a common license framework, and
a license may be installed for the entire network, a single machine,
or a single user. When the network install is used, the computers on
that network collaborate to present a “floating” license to any
machine that wants to run the application, only one at a time (or
however many seats that license is good for).

The even newer world order is Apple’s Mac App Store, which disallows
any form of licensing or license checking for any app sold there. In
exchange, Apple secures the use of these applications against the
Apple ID of the person who purchased it and authorized it on a
particular set of 5 computers.
