[Pro] How to achieve this page layout

I’ve been trying to achieve this effect where the main menu and logo stay in place and the main information panel and images scroll.
I’ve tried a few variations based on the items being set to Absolute (and not fixed in window), on a page which is centred and also no alignment at all.

However I can’t quite achieve the same effect.
What am I missing? I’m fairly sure its something possibly obvious.

Thanks for any inputs

This should be easier than it is in Freeway.

Here’s a simple example of a finished page and a sample Freeway 6 Pro file;
http://d.pr/7L2P

The trick is to create a standard inline construction using a fixed width wrapper that is centred on the page using margin auto and manually set the ‘left’ panel to position:fixed to stop it scrolling with the rest of the page;

name: position
value: fixed !important

In the above example I’ve created a simple class style called ‘fixme’ that I’ve applied to the ‘left’ item to stick its position in the window. I’ve probably upset the balance of the universe by placing a fixed item inside a relative one like this but the page appears to work in the usual browsers I’ve tested it on here.
Regards,
Tim.

Many thanks for the information and the example.
Don’t suppose you happen to have a version of the file for Freeway 5.5.

Once I get the chance to have a look at this then I hope I can get to grips with this. The sample looks great.

Here’s a very quick version of that Freeway 6 Pro file with a lot of the styling missing and saved as a Freeway 5.5 Pro file;
http://d.pr/f/Lm4q

The overall effect should be the same even if some of the border styles and content is missing.

Tim.

Hello Tim,

Really appreciate your help here. I assumed it would be quite straightforward when I set out to build this one.

I noticed a difference in the html item inspector palette between your file and my own and I’m not sure if this is due to the newer version of freeway having additional/different menu setup.
I set this up to show you:
http://www.adevlinvisual.com/test/menucomparison.html

I have tried setting things up based on the file you set up and it looks very promising. I’ll update you once I get back to it later on.

The menu on the left is with a layered item selected and the one on the right is with an inline item selected.

Hi tonzodehoo,

As Dave mentioned the difference you are seeing in the Inspector palette is down to the fact that your item is a layered item and mine was an inline item that floats in the flow of the document.

If you open the site panel up so you can see the items in the page you should see that the ‘left’ and ‘right’ items are both enclosed in a fixed width ‘wrapper’ item. This has been set to center on the browser width by setting the left and right margins to ‘auto’.

Freeway will only let you directly make an item fixed if it is layered (not inflow) which is why I used the ‘fixme’ class to manually fix the item’s position.

I appreciate this isn’t the easiest of examples but I hope it helps you get on and make the layout you need.

Incidentally the example you posted in your initial post was made with RapidWeaver using the Cake template;

Regards,
Tim.

Thanks Tim and Dave,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
I’ve not used inline setups much at also there was a bit for me to get to grips with here but I am now a lot further down the line with this one and really appreciate your inputs.
The control with the inline setup is really something I shall look to use more now that I have gained a bit more confidence and insight into it.

I am looking to incorporate a fading slideshow/scripty fader style slideshow in the big top panel of the inline setup but am experiencing issues with this.

In the scripty fader there is the issue that it can only be applied to layered items.

I have inserted a graphic box of the appropriate size into the html box and added the graphic and the action to the graphic box but the scripty fader does not pull the other images in. Is there something else I can do to get this to function or another action/method of getting a slideshow into an inline setup?

Thanks again.

ScriptyFader2 is now fully inline-aware. You might want to give that a try.

ScriptyFader2 is now fully inline-aware.

Is it on the 'Forge Walter?

I am going insane, that’s really the only explanation. There isn’t a ScriptyFader2. There is a Carousel2, and I recently fixed it to behave properly in an inline setting. Why I thought that was related to ScriptyFader, I cannot say.

Ok, thanks for letting me know and sorry if I’ve aided your descent into insanity with this query!

Is there a way to therefore get ye old scriptyfader to work in an inline setup at all or is there another action which can achieve the same effect in an inline setup?

Any thoughts at all then I’d much appreciate it.

I believe that NewsCycle will work with an inline layout. It is not the same as ScriptyFader under the hood – it lacks SF’s major feature, which is removing the cycling images/html from the page entirely, to speed up initial page load – but it can look similar to SF, and does do the endless fade from one item to the next in a circle.

Many thanks again for the input.

I’ve set this up and its at test stage just now but good as the newscycle is, its the timing of the cycling images and the capacity to order them or make them random as well as adding the scripty buttons which is where I am hoping to get to with this inline setup slideshow.

I can’t see where to click here – is there a fader with navigation on this page? BTW, there’s nothing random about SF – it always uses the same order to display the fading panes – their order in the source code, determined by their ‘stacking order’ on the Freeway page.

News Cycle uses exactly the same ordering model, except that you make your “panes” by inserting inline images or other HTML elements in a parent HTML box. If you wanted to fade between images, your news source box would be an HTML box (off on the pasteboard somewhere) that looked like this:

+-----------------------+
| +-------------------+ |
| |                   | |
| |       image       | |
| |                   | |
| +-------------------+ |
| +-------------------+ |
| |                   | |
| |       image       | |
| |                   | |
| +-------------------+ |
| +-------------------+ |
| |                   | |
| |       image       | |
| |                   | |
| +-------------------+ |
+-----------------------+

The resulting code would be something like this:

<div id="news-source">
	<p><img src="Resources/foo.jpg" alt="foo" /></p>
	<p><img src="Resources/bar.jpg" alt="bar" /></p>
	<p><img src="Resources/baz.jpg" alt="baz" /></p>
</div>

You would sort the images by dragging them up and down within the HTML box. If you wanted to combine HTML (text) with the images, then you would create an inline HTML box in place of the images, and add your text and images into each inline box. This way you could create a caption for each image, or more elaborately, compose a laid-out block with traditional Freeway-positioned elements.

As long as you use the exact same type of content for each element in the cycle (always HTML boxes, always inline images, always list items) the script will know what to do and will give you what you’re looking for. When the page loads, the script first hides the source box entirely, so it doesn’t appear on screen. Next, it looks at the first child element inside the source box and sets that as the template for what the rotating content will be. Finally, it scoops up all of the “peer” elements within the source box and starts its loop, animating each one into place on your desired frequency.

Hello Walter,

there is no fader on the page. There is a setup of newscycle in the top large image banner.

As my usual options for such slide shows, scriptyfader and fadingslideshow don’t function in an inline setup then I have tried to emulate the effect using the newscycle action.
The randomness I referred to was the option in fadingslideshow to present the images in random sequence. Sorry I never made this clear.

I reckon I can go with the newscycle for now in the hope that I may find another way to achieve more fully what I would like.

Thanks for your help in getting me this far down the line and indeed inline!

Cheers

I’ve moved this project on a bit since last time and have come to the point where I want to tidy things up to achieve more of what I’d hoped to.

To this end I am still trying to find a way to get a fading slideshow effect into an inline setup.

I have a few other issues to address with this setup but if anyone has any contributions at all I’d appreciate it.

ScriptyFader can now be used in an inline context. Download the latest version from ActionsForge.
