I think you could make it with the showcase action.
I should not have to be flash, and in showcase you can make a slider like this to.

Actually, I wold like to apply the square effect to a single immage, the work should be like this:
the html page load
the single image appears with the squared effect
the image remains fixed
then I’ll click to an arrow and the cycle begin to the step 1.
you can also use wowslider for it, free version leaves a watermark thoug…its js based
i do not know, if the showcase action can do that, what i would recommand, is that you go to the website of Dan Jasker and see at his tutorials/screencasts.
He has a realy good one, about Creating Image SlideShows With FancyBox and JQuery .
I think that is the road you should ?take, since you discribe the squeares etc.
they are not to expensive and are fun and in no time you understand what he explains.
