This is probably a very elementary question. I have completed the pages of a web site called The Dining Room. The index.html page is in a folder in my Documents called ‘Web Folder’ I need to put it in a file called htdocs to upload to my hosts server. Do I create a folder in my Documents called hdocs and then do ‘save as’ to that folder? Working on Mac OSX 10.6 and using Freeway Pro. If I do this will it cause problems with the existing web pages?
The htdocs folder is most likely already there on your web host in your root directory. Have you tried loging in with an ftp client to see what is there?
If the directory is there, just make sure you tell Freeway where to find it in the document setup.
Thanks for your reply, I have done a ‘save as’ of my index page and called
it htdocs so I have a copy
of my web site in my Documents folder with that name. I have not yet
uploaded the site FTP to
my host server, so what you say may work out when I do so and Freeway will
create a htdocs
Directory anyway is that right?

As Chucka says this should be set in your FW doc under File>Document

In FW, keep your home page as index.html (do note rename it) then follow Davids step-by-step in File > Document Set Up.
This will upload your site to the htdocs (which is probably already there). The htdocs folder is simply a folder that the web browser will look in to find your index.html page
For things like this is might be worth getting an FTP application so you can see exactly what is on the server.
There are a few around - Transit, Fetch etc. It really does help.

At the very least should have a look at your server so that you can see the file structure there - using one of these - and once you understand better you can let FW do the uploading for you.
That folder ‘htdocs’ will be there already and you DO NOT want a FW
created one to try to overwrite it.
To clarify further, the folder that your web site files go into can
be called whatever your web hosting company decides. Sometimes it
will be “htdocs”, sometimes it will be “www”, sometimes it will be
named after your web site domain name, and so on. The “htdocs” name
is fairly common but there is NO specific standard name - it is just
whatever your site’s ‘web root’ (the starting point or ‘root’ level
of your publically-accessible web site) is called.
You need to know the FTP details for uploading to your site. If you
log in using Transmit or CyberDuck with just your FTP address,
username and password you may go straight into the web roote, or
you may need to click into a folder.
When you log in, if you find yourself at the point where your HTML
files should go then you can leave the Path field blank in Freeway’s
upload dialog. But if you need to click into a folder first, put that
folder’s name into the Path field in Freeway’s Upload dialog. That
simply says “go to this place, log in, then go into that folder
before starting the upload”.
Thanks for that explanation, I have used that CyberDuck programme, and
dispite the silly name, it’s not a bad programme.
I have now successfully uploaded my website, and it’s not looking bad, have
a look at www.thediningroom.org
Best regards David

It is looking good but just thought I would mention a couple of things
“…whilst doing her studies that she worked evenings and weekeds at Caffe Uno”
Also on a couple of the pages the links dont show in the navigation menu in the visited state ie roll over Mains and Location when on the Desserts page.
Is your Navigation on a Master page - if not it should be - and remember to only update it on the Master.
Thanks for pointing those things out. I must check them. I am trying to keep
the menu etc to the Master Page etc.
On the literals I have to make sure that all spelling etc is correct that is
always important. I have also
Downloaded CyberDuck FTP programme and will try and use that to check each
page uploaded to the server.
Kind regards from an elderly novice David
