[Pro] HTML vs Graphic-Advantage?

Just looking at different ways of doing things. Keep in mind I’m new to all this. If I were to draw out an HTML box and then insert a graphic image as the background is there any advantage to that as opposed to just drawing out a graphic box with the same graphic in it? When done as HTML, it only looks correct in preview if I check “slice”. What exactly does that do?

It depends what you are actually trying to achieve.

Rather than insert a graphic as a background you have the option with an HTML box to choose a background.

With your HTML box selected choose the Paintbrush tab - down to Background and select from the image picker. You can then decide if you want your bg image to repeat or not (depending on its size relative to the HTML container).

But as I say it would help if you tell us where you are wanting to go with this.

What you described is what I’m referring to, an HTML Box with an image as a background. Image size same size as box, no tiling. Usage doesn’t matter at this point. Is there an advantage to that as opposed to a graphic element. Perhaps it loads faster or what ever. What if I had a number of product shots about 385x285 px and I wanted to put text on top of that ( in a blank area of the image), what would you suggest? Also, back to the HTML thing, as I said, when I tied it the image only looked correct when slice was checked. Why and what does that do?

That wasn’t clear from your OP - you used the terms ‘insert a graphic image’ which mislead me.

If you have HTML text within your HTML container then no slicing should be necessary. If you use graphic text then there are other factors to consider such as anti-aliasing against a bg image (which FW is not aware of)

As to adding text over an image then I would use layered graphic and HTML boxes as positioning text in a specific place in an HTML box over a bg image is difficult.

As far as page load times go - that will depend on the relative sizes of the images (in Kb)

I think Search Engine Optimisation plays a part in it for me. I’m building a site at the moment. I’ve built many with Freeway and hopefully get better and learn more each time.

At the top of my page is the company logo. I’ve decided to draw an HTML box and put the logo in as a back ground (no tiling). I did this because I seem to be on a mission at the moment to keep my Freeway HTML code as lean as possible. If I use the ‘Externalise’ action by Tim Plumb (google it, because it’s not on ActionsForge). This action moves the size, positioning and styling out of the HTML into the CSS styling; keeping the code lean and moving the clutter out of the way as search bots trawl the page which is better for SEO.

But, for other pictures on the page I will probably draw a graphic item and import the picture. This way I will be able to enter the ‘Alt’ info, which allows me to describe in words what the picture is about, which again of course is important for SEO. (the externalise action will not move the size and position for a graphic away into the CSS).

So there are two different reasons why I might use the different techniques. I’d be interested to hear the thoughts of others to learn more.

Sly.
