[Pro] iFrame advice (maybe for Walt)

Hi Walt or anyone,

I am set on trying to do this.

I have 20 icons and about 7 of them link to external sites. Right now I have Spawn to new window but really keep coming back to the iFrame. Tried it once and hated the scroll bar which was also next to the scroll bar for the site page.

I now have figured this. If I am to use it, i will not have scroll bar on at all for the iFRAME.

I think to achieve this I need to keep stretching the iFRAME until it covers the length of the internet page it is housing to see all without having to scroll in iFRAME. think I got it.

HOWEVER, is it possible to set it up where the iFRAME changes when I click on multiple hyperlinks (as opposed to multiple iframes), but the SIZE of the iframe would then be too short or too long depending on the page that loads.

In other words, I know how to get the iframe to display pages from multiple links, however if I set the height based on a page, this could be a problem as the internet page changes,

make any sense at all?

You can only access the height of the iframe page through JavaScript if it originates from your server. There’s no way to set this attribute any other way, so unless you use an actual frame (rather than an iframe) this isn’t going to work. Have a look in the manual for the basics on making a regular frame. It may work out fine for you.

Walt- can;t I go to INSERT, ACTION ITEM, iFRAME and when the green box appears make it whatever height (and width I want)?

Yes, but you can’t know ahead of time what size you need it to be. It’s that not knowing how tall a specific web page will be that keeps this from working. If the page you were hosting in the iframe was on your server, then you could use JavaScript to resize the iframe to fit after it loads, kind of how eBay does it with the auction specifics.

gotcha!.

so a suggested work around would be instead of the 7 links changing in 1 iframe on 1 of my pages, I should have each iframe on a different page of my site.

When the person clicks the link, it takes you to a new page of mine of which there, the iframe website appears.

this should be easy…

can I make it so when they click the icon, it takes them a little lower right to the iframe? is this done by anchors?

actually now that I am dreaming… instead of just jumping to the iframe (anchor?) ideally could the page sort of slide or scroll down to the iframe after you click the icon. (like a vertical carousel affect)

so in other words,

a person clicks the icon and the page rolls downward to the IFRAME.

how cool would that be? impossible?

You can try using an anchor to go down into the page, but it’s not under your control – you’ll have to watch it carefully – because if they redesign and remove that anchor, your page won’t do what you expect.

Control click onto something near where you are trying to jump, and (if you have the Develop menu enabled) choose Inspect Element from the contextual menu and see if you can find some element with an ID near where you want the page to go. If you do, just copy the ID from that element and add it to the URL that you place in your link.

http://example.com

becomes

http://example.com#theIdYouFound

and that will smack that particular ID up to the top of the iframe or frame.

Only if you own that other page. You would need to add script to the head of the foreign page, and that’s not allowed.

got it- I will get all the iframes into place and worry later about anchoring or whatever other techniques.

Please if you see anything else that is not done well or right on the site, I am open to criticism for improvement.

Thanks,

Have a great night!!

Hi Barry,

I now looked several time at your page and am still not sure what to say cause naturally it’s a hard nut to shell. You, on the one hand want to improve a new key-visual from the start and keep on the other a huge archive you collected within the years.

The idea of a welcome screen jump page is nice but not very practicable (to my understandings) - even old fashioned, much less what google think about it. And what shall happen if you jump back to your index page? Always reloading the welcome stuff?

We have had several discussions about:

A page has a specific width, but what about the height?

I personal think that a page has no height, however a few projects forced me to think they have. The result on the second is always what I want to avoid:

Discussions about overflowing text, reducing or deleting text just for the benefit of “not scrolling cause mankind is to lazy to do?”

Well I know this all is not really helpful, apologize - but I got the certain feeling that I had to write some lines (if not here maybe somewhere else).

I still have no idea what to recommend, but “pop-ups” (Spawn, IFrame whatever) is to my understanding something that should not be overworked (punished?? not sure if this is proper english).

Unusual navigation is cool, but probably that’s the real reason why I struggle with this project cause I know, that you hard work on sharing cool stuff to educate kids - and probably the stuff should be the nut to bolt and not the way how to reach it (and Kids are sometimes quick bored or overwhelmed).

I these days had to learn a new english word called patronising. It might be that this is cause of reduced english knowledge, probably I am sometimes too much emotionally - but I want to avoid that all stuff sounds like “weisenheimer” found that in a dictionary - coooool.

Cheers

Thomas

Thomas thanks for the response and mostly aboutt welcome screen
. I will consider your ideas
I do want to mention that some of the confusion maybe caused by the. Fact that many of the links are linked to the old website
. I did this just for now and not sure why I did. Maybe I should unconnect it totally to the old site to make it easier to see.

This thread was about iframw usage and I think I will replace all the pop up spawn pages with iframes below.
