[Pro] Importing photos from iPhoto

Having upgraded to Freeway Pro 5.5 (and running OSX 10.6.4) I have tried and will use the new Showcase action, I have been happily dragging photos from my extensive iPhoto library directly into Showcase.

Not having updated my website for quite a while, to my dismay I now find it is apparently no longer possible to drag and drop photos directly from iPhoto to my graphic items. Instead I have to go through a menu which takes several seconds to build up every time I need it and which presents my photos in a small frame and not in exactly the same hierarchical order, since it does not show the top hierarchical item: Events.

The “Using Freeway 5.5 Guide” states at page 115:
“In Freeway, you can drag a photo from iPhoto onto your page, for instance.”
Alas, no more.

But how could direct drag-and-drop be implemented in Showcase, and no longer in Freeway itself??

It must be a bug. Hopefully Softpress releases an update that fixes this soon!

It’s Softpress’s way of looking after you! Seriously though, dragging in picture direct from iPhoto is a really bad idea. Exporting them at the correct size from iPhoto is good, though …

I’m sorry to hear that.
I have always been under the impression Freeway was very smart by reducing file size and resolution of graphics to the minimum needed, without any intervention from my part.

So the correct workflow now would be to export photos from iPhoto in the right format (which is what?) to a media directory, and only then import them into Freeway and into Showcase as well?

Is this what Softpress recommends? I hope not…

Yes, it is, but there are limits. A picture straight out of iPhoto could be 4000px wide, and you probably don’t need it to be more than, say, 600. Better to export from iPhoto, maybe slightly too big to give you a bit of wiggle room, then let Freeway resize it for you when you’ve got it in place.

and into Showcase as well?

Remember that Showcase is a standalone app that does image resizing as part of the gallery creation process and you can certainly drag and drop from iPhoto into it.

One of the reasons I bought Freeway Pro in the first place was that I didn’t have to edit my photos to fit the webpages, just drag and drop from iPhoto and Freeway did the rest.

Now I need to resize, crop and save the version in correct size in Media folder. Just like people who are not using Freeway. What’s next, start writing my own code?

If I’d known this change, I would have reconsidered upgrading to 5.5 and perhaps decided not to.

You can drag ‘n’ drop from the finder.
