[Pro] Inconsistent mp3 behaviour in Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer

Hi!
I’m something of a novice with Freeway, but the behaviour of mp3 files seems to have changed since upgrading to Firefox 4 (Mac). Have a look at http://www.martineastwell.com/audiosamples.html

Originally, the QuickTime player appeared at once and the audio started to play as soon as a proportion of the audio had loaded. Now, nothing happens until the whole file has loaded. It does play then, but the long loading time gives the unfortunate impression that the link is broken. The same page works fine in Safari.

Viewing the same page on Internet Explorer on Windows 7 and no QuickTime installed, the computer offers to play the audio in Windows Media Player. This looks horrible, if only because the HTML item, though the right size for QuickTime Player, is too small for WMP. I’d imagine I can either draw a larger HTML item, or provide a separate link for Windows users.

Thanks in advance

and no QuickTime installed

But more and more Windoze users and their pals have iPods, iPads and iPhones - and as a result QT. I know this isn’t an answer to your problem but…

Hi! I have had a reply to this problem from Freeway support as follows;

"There seems to be an issue at the moment with the way that Firefox 4 handles embedded QuickTime content, in that FF4 doesn’t stream the content - and then start to play - until the file is completely loaded.

This affects video and audio files that use the QuickTime embed attribute.

Freeway is certainly publishing the code correctly, so this is does not appear to be a Freeway issue - though we would like to get to the source of the problem so we can advise customers on the best options to fix things. If you Google for “firefox4 quicktime movie problem” (without the quotes) you will see that this is not a problem specific to Freeway users.

Some Leopard users report that Firefox 4 displays and plays QT content fine (as it does in FF3), but Snow Leopard seems to have problems. This may be due to the way that QuickTime and Firefox 4 play together, as Leopard and Snow Leopard use slightly different versions of QuickTime.

As soon as we find a workaround for the problems with Firefox 4, we will put up an article on our KnowledgeBase at http://www.softpress.com/kb/. It might be that Firefox will release a new update soon to fix the problem, in which case we will tell you which version you need to download an install."

So… Firefox 4 does not handle my QuickTime audio properly, Internet Explorer, makes it look weird, and Chrome puts up a message that comes close to suggesting that QuickTime is a danger to my computer…Oh dear!
