[Pro] Inline boxes shifting down

I have run into another problem and, despite checking through the database, I haven’t found a solution.

As part of my inline design, I have created an HTML box which contains two child boxes. I want the boxes to sit next to each other on a larger screen and underneath each other on mobile view.

I have achieved this by floating the inline child boxes left within the parent box. So far, so good…

The problem is that the right hand child box won’t stay aligned to the top of the parent box. If I click somewhere, or even just change a setting, it slips down about 40 pixels, which takes it below the bottom of the parent box, and I can’t get it back where it was.

I have tried undoing the action that caused the shift and nothing happens. I have also tried positioning the cursor in the box and deleting any errant space, but that just deletes the entire box.

The only way I have been able to reposition it is to save when it’s in position then close and reopen when it slips down. However this is not a great solution as the moment I resume work on the reopened document it slips back down again!

Am I doing something wrong or is it just temperamental?

Hi Jenny,

What happens when you preview the page in a browser? IF it’s as intended, don’t worry too much about what you see in the Freeway edit view.

If the problem is still there is there a link we can see?

Hi David

Thanks for responding so quickly.

To upload the page for you I had to move the file from the iMac I’m using to design the site to the MacBook where all my service provider information is.

On the MacBook I couldn’t make the boxes move, even when I deliberately tried to do so.

So now I’m wondering if it could be an OS issue. The iMac is on Sierra, but the MacBook Pro is still on El Capitan. Does this sound plausible?

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to upload the page in the end as it seems my service provider is also having some issues.

If you make no files changes, what happens to your two boxes if you just view the page in a browser? Meaning the Freeway design view is far from accurate compared to what is seen in a browser. The real truth of a problem should be viewable in the browser view.

Freeway > File Menu > View in a browser

When you float HTML boxes (left of right) they behave like inline text. Meaning although they can be dragged it’s fiddly and prone to error. It’s best to copy/delete command-x, position the I beam text cursor and paste command-v into the text.

Tip: Turn on Invisibles Freeway > View > Invisibles might be a help here.

Also: You’d need to move the whole project (Freeway file / master images / site folder) to the new computer to maintain how Freeway sees you files. Or Save as Archive to collect everything for the move.

It could be easer to move your provider information to the working machine instead.

If a box slips down in the editor it is also out of line when viewed in the browser. This seems to be any browser, I have tried all the ones I have installed.

I can’t drag the boxes. When they are in line with each other they sometimes switch places, but when the right one slips down I can’t drag it at all.

I am mainly copying and pasting text from my non-responsive site, but the slipping still happens outside of these actions.

On the page I have two identical boxes sitting next to each other. When one of the children inside the first box slips down the invisible symbols are exactly the same in that box as they are in the one next to it (that hasn’t slipped).

I moved the whole site between the two computers using a memory stick. I use the iMac, with its big screen, for designing and the Macbook for updating and uploading content. The MacBook is my main computer and is where the finished site will be stored and updated.

I hope this helps.

Unfortunately inline HTML elements can be slippery devils to drag. A click can be interpreted by a drag. For example when using a Magic Mouse even a click on a HTML inline box can make the item move from left to right (or up an down in the source order in the site palette - page show items.) You can recognise this by behaviour by looking in Freeway > Edit > Undo Drag Inline.

It’s easy to drag too far and end up putting the HTML box into the next

Making it drop in the Freeway edit view. Turn on the hidden characters and you will recognise this.

Once you realise the dragging is so sensitive and little feedback, rather than dragging inline HTML elements use copy and paste instead.

  1. In the Site Palette select the “page" and at the top. It will show your floated items.
  2. Click on the Palette item to select it.
  3. Command-x to copy and cut.
  4. In page document click and insert your i-beam before remaining floated inline box. Command-v

If you’ve got invisibles turned on both floated boxes should be on the same line before a paragraph hidden character.

If your box has still dropped (as seen in the browser) I would think theres and issue with the setting on that box.

Another tip is to use the Site Palette with items viewable.

  1. Site Palette > Click > highlight the item in the palette who’s content you want to edit.
  2. Hit return
  3. The text edit cursor is immediately inserted at the beginning of the box content. Use the arrow keys to navigate where you want to insert > paste items.

This helps to not touch or move structural items on your site when editing content.

Jenny, I’ve been following your posts and can sympathize with your responsive problems. I have started using BackDraft with Freeway and things are going much smoother for me now. I suggest you having a look and his tutorials and download Backdraft. Good luck.

Thanks so much for your help, David.

I tried a couple of your suggestions, but the site was still behaving erratically, so in the end I decided to move it over to the laptop. Touch wood… it seems to be behaving itself now.

Thank you for your Backdraft suggestion too, Chod.

If I wasn’t so close to completing the site in Freeway I would definitely check it out. However, the site is up and published now, so I’m hoping it will last me a while.
