[Pro] Is it possible to have one size master page that changes size?

I’m new to Freeway pro and have a question about page length. I created several master pages to accommodate pages of different heights. Now I have to change the drop down menu on all the masters if I change the menu. Is there a better approach? Is it possible to make a single master page that accommodates different heights or is it possible to make a single drop down menu for several master pages?

Thanks for any help,

David

Unless you’re worried about sticking a footer to the bottom of your page, the height of the master has little or no bearing on the pages derived from it. There are two reasons:

One, Freeway won’t publish a page with too much height. It always trims the output dimensions (not literally – but this is an implementation detail) to match the height of the lowest positioned element on the actual page. This means that you could set up your master page to a ridiculous height (to match the largest amount of content you can imagine) without any consequence.

Two, HTML pages don’t have any limits on height – they’re not made of paper, only code, and can stretch.

Oh, and there’s a third thing to think about: if you change the height of one of the child pages, the only thing that will be “detached” from the master are the page dimensions (and maybe some associated settings, like alignment). The master content will remain in place and editable on your master page for all child pages of that master.

Thanks for the reply Walter, I would like to have stat counter at the bottom of the pages, but if that isn’t possible to do with a single master page, I can position it manually on each page.

Let me know if there is a way to put a footer at the bottom of a master that will stick to the bottom of the page as other content expands the page.

Thanks so much for the help,

David

The position of the stat counter (from the master page) is entirely independent of its content (also from the master page). So you could move the stat counter to be the lowest thing on each page as you adjust the content of each page, and nothing would be broken by this. If you were to alter the code of that stat counter somewhat, you might find that the update (done on the master) didn’t take on the children, but I would actually be surprised if that was always the case. Each element from the master page has two checkboxes in its Inspector: User Master Content and Use Master Settings.

As far as making a master page that contains an inline layout (which is what you would need to have in order to create a truly automatic footer) that’s strictly not possible, because all inline elements are no longer considered separate elements – they become content from a Master Page perspective, like the letter A or something. Thus unless you had a separate master page for each child page (which is entirely silly) you could not control the anything besides the position and size of the outermost box of an inline layout from the master page, because the moment you added any unique content at all to a child page, the content connection to the master would be broken.

Thanks once more Walter, I’m playing around with it now, and will either
move it on each page as you described, or change the stat counter code to
be less obtrusive and put it beside my drop down menu. That might be
easier, I don’t really need it at the bottom of the page, or for that
matter, I don’t need to see it at all.

I appreciate the help,

David

or for that matter, I don’t need to see it at all.

Then use Walter’s FreeCounter2 action - ActionsForge - The Complete Repository of Freeway Actions

All the stats you need without that annoying visible counter where visitors can see how many (or few) hits you have had.

Dave,
I like stat counter, I just don’t need it prominent on the pages. It’s easy to make it subtle or not be visible on the pages at all.

I’m trying to put it at the top of the page so that it doesn’t alter the page height.

Thanks for the tip.

The question you should ask yourself is whether these stats are for you or for your visitor.

My personal opinion is that my visitor doesn’t need to know anything about how many times my page has been visited.

And if the visitor doesn’t need to know then they don’t need to see it.

I think you’re right Dave.
