[Pro] Layout not matching browser - tips for placing/sizing images?

Hi

I’ve found when pulling in images to use in my layout, they might look fine in the layout but then it looks quite different when I test in my browser, and it’s been hit and miss getting it to look OK on the browser. In particuarly images which overlap each other and I’ve rotated them.

Any tips and tricks for how to avoid this problem? Also I’ve noticed borders added look different thicknesses depending on the image, and I’d rather have consistency.

I can’t really size outside of Freeway as I can’t tell at the moment what size I’ll be needing them at in the layout and need to play about with the layout.

Hope someone can advise.

Ta

Try using Freeway to size the image for you. Draw your graphic box, import your image, then scale and pad, or scale and trim as you wish, add borders etc. Then export that image, select it and click File->Export, save the exported image in your media file. Then use the exported image in the design. This should ensure that the image you are using in the design will meet the criteria you set for it.

I usually create a blank master page just of this process, where I can import and size a bunch of images.

Hi,

Thanks for that - will try out asap and see how I get on. I hadn’t realised that I should be exporting the file as well.

Not really a necessary step but one in place of importing resized graphics as pass-throughs (pass-throughs are untouched by the Freeway optimisation process)

I confess I don’t really understand yet what happens with the Freeway optimisation process. I’ve not been placing them as pass-throughs up to now, should I be? I haven’t because in some cases I know the resolution is ridiculously high as I’ve been using the images for print, and in others, people have supplied me with lo-res web pics. But if it’s better to pass-through, then resize and then optimise that’s great to know. Should I put borders on afterwards or does it not matter?

You get the best from lossless formats like Photoshop psd files directly imported and sized in FW but sometimes there can be issues with rotated images and overlapping images combining.

Best to check that the output type is correct in FW - sometimes it can get it wrong.

As a general rule photos should be jpg. And if there is transparency involved png.

To stop images combining then put them on separate layers.

Only if you want FW to leave them alone. As you have found out certainly while still in the layout stage it is a huge advantage to be able to resize, rotate etc. from within FW.

Most folk have no problems with quality of output from FW generated/optimised images but there are circumstances where you might do the layout with FW outputted images until the final stage where you might then want to use externally optimised images imported as pass-throughs (in a high quality photo site for example).
