[Pro] Menu Items position

Hi. I have created a Menu Bar and positioned it near the bottom of my page layout. I have made a Menu Item table and bottom-justified the text. I cannot figure out how to cause the Menu Items table to appear above the Menu Bar, nor how to specify in any way the location of the Menu Items table’s appearance on the page. Typically, layer items can be positioned on an x-y coordinate system. How does this work with Freeway 5.4? Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks, David

how to cause the Menu Items table to appear above the Menu Bar

I don’t think that you can - unless there is some serious jiggery pokery that can be applied!

The position of the Menu bar itself determines where the menu items appear. The menu items table itself should be placed on the pasteboard and not be a layer.

David,

Thanks for the reply. I guess I can open the published files in a more robust web authoring program and apply the jiggery pokery there. I don’t know the reason for moving the Menu Items table off the page, except that it makes layout less cluttered. I just deselect the Show button, and the page works fine.
Any recommendations for placing a submenu above a button? I tried the Show/Hide action, but the submenu disappeared as soon as I rolled off of the button.

Thanks again, David

Do you have a sample site location for this? I’m not quite sure what you’re trying to do. It sounds like a change in approach rather than finding other means.

Hi David,
You can place the sub menu items above the main menu bar if you know
where to change the CSS styling for them. Unfortunately because the
CSS Menus action is creating all of the styling as well as the menus
themselves injecting the right code in the right place becomes an issue.

You can use an action to do this and as if by magic…
http://www.freewayactions.com/test/css-sub-menu-position/

It’s a hack and simply forces each submenu up the page higher than it
would normally go. Specify the vertical offset of each of the first
ten sub-menus (positive or negative values) and the action will shift
them up and down for you. Be warned that if you use a positive number
(which will move the menus down below the main menu) then as the mouse
moves out of the main menu and before it gets to the sub-menu the sub-
menu will disappear (unless you are very quick!).

Regards,
Tim.

Tim,

Thanks for the action link, which works very well. I have also noticed, regardless of the technique used, that submenus do not align vertically directly above or below the main menu. On my sample page (link below,) the top menu is a Menu Bar action, and the bottom is a CSS Menu action. In neither case does the submenu content align with the menu. Any thoughts?

Thanks again, David

Hi David,
I’m looking at the menus in both Safari and Firefox and they appear
reasonably positioned compared to their parent items. All of the menus
appear centered below (or above) the main menu items from what I can
see.

Tim.

Hi Tim,

Can the technique used in the action be adapted to position the submenus so that they appear to overlay the main menu a few pixels to the left or right, which would make the navigating the submenus slightly easier, especially if you have a large number if items in them.

Regards, Steve

Hi Steve,
A quick update to the action now allows you to specify the horizontal
and vertical offsets of the sub menu.
http://www.freewayactions.com/test/css-sub-menu-position/

Be warned though that the z-ordering of the sub menus hasn’t been
altered so you may see child menus appearing behind (or partially
behind) parent menu items depending on the values used in the action.

Tim.

Hi Tim,

Great, and so fast! I’ll have a go with it and report back…

I’ve applied it to all of the menus on the master page (10 of them) and when I publish it is generating this Javascript error:

fwParameters[“menu” + i + “x”] has no properties

My CSS Menu items have products selected using PHP Text Link with Query Action applied to all the submenu items, see the site here: (it won’t publish with the action applied to the Menus).

http://www.cotswoldengineeringsupplies.co.uk/2009-dev2/

The CSS Submenu Position action doesn’t seem to like my menu items.

Any ideas as why this is the case.

Kind regards
Steve.
