[Pro] New to FW from GL - center page?

I am trialing Freeway to see if it can take the place of my Golive CS1 which I have been using for years, and I have fallen at the first hurdle. I like to build sites with a centered page format (see www.artdesign.me.uk) and in GL I usually use a single cell table and build everything in that. In the absence of a simple ‘center page’ option I have tried to do the same in FW but when trying to view in a browser an error comes up that Item1 will not publish. The search in the PDF help doc seems to jave no reference to the subject. Help please.

On your page (Master page if you keep all pages centred) go to the Inspector and , with no items selected, you will see half way down the Align: selector. Choose Align: Center.

Then make up your page without an initial table cell.

Colin - The page has been centered (table removed) with a size of 900x630px and I gave it a colour and it looked fine in Freeway but when viewed in Safari the page is not shown as 900x630px and there is no colour, the graphics I applied do show but in a floating way as there is no page area defined.

So as an alternative I put an empty (but coloured) graphic box 900x630px to cover the page (sent to back) and that does work in the browser but I do not seem to be able to make the ‘border’ option work. Is there a way of attaching a screen shot to this forum so I can show you?

You can use your Web server to host any images, and post a link to
those images here. This is a mailing list first and foremost, so we
don’t allow attachments (as they would simply clog the in-boxes of
hundreds of people).

In the absence of a screenshot try this as an exercise:

  1. Draw your background graphic item and select it.

  2. In the Inspector, click on the second tab (paintbrush) and select a background colour (and opacity or effect if you wish).

  3. In the Inspector click on the Border disclosure triangle to ensure you can see the options and select a colour and size, etc.

  4. Click on the Effects triangle and then choose one, say Outer Shadow (hover over each shape to see what it means).

  5. The next disclosure triangle will then open the settings for Opacity, Angle, etc., for the shadow.

  6. Click on the Shape triangle and set a radius for Corners, or choose Custom from the drop-down so that you can set each corner individually.

  7. Finally, if you want to ensure that the shadow has transparency, go to the Inspector, third tab (mini-web page) and change the Type to PNG and Colors: Millions

It is also wise to Lock the item if you are going to draw new content above it. (If you have content already on the page, make sure you send the page sized graphic item to the back (‘Command’ + ‘Hyphen’ keys).

Note that if you draw an new item within the bounds of background graphic, it will be come a child of that graphic and you will see it indented in the Site Panel tree on the left of the screen. If you extend over the bounds it will become a separate Layer. To change a child to a layer, select its name in the Site Panel and drag the name to the left. Select layer in the Inspector checkbox.

Freeway works very like a DTP application and if you think in those terms you will soon get the hang of things. The best way to learn is experiment - keep a little test site for yourself and click on everything as you go, just to see what each tool or option does. Ask on here, freely, we were all novices once (and I wish there had been something like this forum when I started around FW version 2) and many are non-coders who rely on Freeway’s output.
