[Pro] Old pages still being indexed

I took over a website that was previously on Wordpress. I’m finished with the site now, but when I google the business name, some of her old pages are still showing up.

I’ve overwritten the obvious pages, index, about, contact, etc. but it would be nice if these old obsolete pages would go away. Does anyone have any ideas how I might address this?

Thanks for sharing your collective wisdom!

Time

Google will come round again and re-index the site but it might not be today or this week or this month…you will have to be patient.

You can use a 301 redirect if you have pages that dont exist any more and want to point visitors to the equivalent in the new site but you may not feel that is worth the hassle.

Dave,

The pages do exist. I would like to delete them. They are not a part of my design or the client’s current website. It’s been approximately 10 months. I have no idea what the urls are unless they show up in google. Would it help if I posted an example? They urls are very random stuff that I suspect was generated largely by Wordpress.

Hope I’m making sense.

If they do exist on the server then you should do a manual clean out using an FTP app or the File Manager in cPanel.

Do a screen grab of the contents of your site folder, compare it with the server and delete all ‘old’ files - ones that don’t belong to the new site.

Just be careful as there may be some files that enable server functionality in there. If in doubt try and visit them in a Browser. If you get a web page that doesn’t belong then trash it.

Makes sense. Maybe next time I’ll think to do this before I upload my freeway site. The screen grab first is a good idea too. Thanks again, Dave!

Thanks everyone for the help! I ended up deleting everything on the server and uploading fresh. Wordpress is a nasty little bugger that uploads pieces and parts all over the place! Also, I made a 404 page that should take care of future errors.

Thanks again Dave!
