[Pro] OVERFLOWED ITEMS

I get the following error message with FW 5.5.1 after I click the browser button and build:

Publish Problems
18 September 2010 13:19:40

OVERFLOWED ITEMS. The following items are overflowed and will not be published.
Item: “bodyHTML1”, Page: “home”.
Item: “bodyHTML1”, Page: “home”.
Item: “bodyHTML1”, Page: “profils”.

I actually created 3 pages with the name “home”. Each one under its own language folder, EN, FI, FR. So how can I figure out which 2 ones is the trouble about?

I resized randomly the item in question so that is does not seem to overlap (hmm overflow?…) with any other item in the page “home”. It looks that I didn’t get it right. The error is very sticky and the page seems ok to me in safari…

Any idea where should I investigate?

Hi Claude

As the error suggests this is referring to the item ‘bodyHTML1’ on 3 different pages - home, home and profils

Are these pages all created from the same master?

If so that is where to start - the Master - and look for the item ‘bodyHTML1’

In FW change from ‘Site’ to ‘Page’ view in the site inspector at the LHS of your screen (by clicking on the Site header for that column) - this allows you to see all items on that page. Selecting ‘bodyHTML1’ in the list and then hitting the enter key will take you to the item on the page in edit mode. (Flashing cursor in the box) and it should then be clear where the problem lies.

Hi Dave,

The fact is that I got entangled in multiple overlapping “bodyHTML1” in multiple pages having the same master. Your trick works and I deleted to non needed items. Every thing back to normal. Tx a lot for your patience, Dave!

Now, a good question is, as I didn’t intend to copy these items how did I do it? I am not sure how, but I suspect I may have involuntarily duplicated a locked item. Experimenting further.

You may have reapplied a Master - if you do that before deleting existing Master items you can end up with overlapping duplicates (this also happens if you have broken the link with the Master item)

Oh, yes, reapplying the Master… I have done that many times (blushing), as a FW 5.5 beginner I use to love it since it sounds like a reset function. Something like “forget your changes and restart from a clean page”. But it is not obviously…

Hence my question: In what case should I /not/ reapply a master page? Any pointer to my question?

Ever learning

If you are going to reapply a Master just make sure that you delete all existing Master items first. Or you will get duplicates.

Personally I select and copy all items that are unique then delete the contents of the page then reapply the Master and paste back the unique content.

All Master items that have changed in any way. If you have a master item and you change anything about it (position, content) then it will remain on the page and a new Master item will be added to the page. If it’s a Master item and both the Use Master Settings and Content options are checked in the Inspector then it won’t get duplicated.
