[Pro] Page Titles?

I was giving some thought to something Ernie said in another thread on this forum about page titles being truncated by Google and other search engines. As a result, I’m not starting to question my own titling methodology.

Here’s an example. Here are some page titles from a site I just finished.

Richmond New Homes | River City Builders | About Us

Richmond New Homes | River City Builders | Testimonials

Richmond New Homes | River City Builders | Contact Us

Richmond New Homes | River City Builders | Our 2013 Models

Using this methodology, if Google or Bing does find one of my clients pages, it’s likely all of the page titles will be truncated so they look the same.

How are most of you handling page titles these days?

I put the distinctive part first, followed by a pipe or dash and the hierarchical stuff (folder name, site name, descriptive spider-bait).

So, something like this?

First I’d say that the branding side of me loves this - you have Enforced
The Brand™.

But after that, the UX side of me sees titles like this as unnatural…
nobody speaks like this - with piping and such. The SEO side of me thought
the same way about meta description tags - that they should read as single,
natural sentences that describe their page content. Eventually, my inner UX
and SEO compromised and suggested that Page Titles should take the place of
the meta description function. My inner Brand Manager is still pouting.

For example

Richmond New Homes | River City Builders | About Us

might take a step and become

Richmond New Homes by River City Builders - About Us

This sounds more like a sentence, although it is not really. The focus or
subject is still an afterthought, and it’s unclear who this “Us” is aimed
at… Is this page about Richmond New Homes, or about River City Builders? Or
both? Let’s try it again:

About Richmond New Homes by River City Builders

About River City Builders, makers of Richmond New Homes

About Richmond New Homes and River City Builders

Better… but “about” is not active in describing what the user is doing or
expecting - we need a verb:

Learn more about Richmond New Homes by River City Builders

Ahh… Now I like that. It’s not what Branding Me prefers, but I can argue
the branding is still there - just easier for humans to read in different
situations. The rest could go something like this:

Richmond New Homes | River City Builders | Testimonials

Very nice.

Unfortunately, I’m so used to Branding™ that it’ll take me some time to get used to this approach, but I will. Thanks for the lesson.

BTW, are you still using meta tags?

Should the company name always be last in a title?

No. Nor does it need to be first or even there at all, strictly speaking.
