[Pro] PHP Feedback form and Send form spam

Hi friends… I am having a dilemma on one of my small sites. I am getting a ton of emails from spammers filling out the form with a bunch of numbers in the name field and reply to emails are all different.

So I deleted the Tim’s form and replaced with the Send Form
and thought that might shake things up… but soon another bunch came thru… I have checked and my site is not hacked… Any advice? Thx

Have you enabled the Honey Trap feature in either of these form handlers?

PHP feedback form has an Add spam trap… so yes that was checked.

The Send form has no such option on the form…
is that what you mean?

SendForm has it enabled by default. I just checked, since I hadn’t used it in a long while.

Two possibilities here:

  1. The spam sending script is smart enough to read the page source and figure out that the honey-trap fields are what they are. This is semi-scary.
  2. They are using humans to do the spamming.

I would start looking at third-party systems, like maybe MailRoute, to filter the incoming mail. I don’t believe in the trade-off of asking the users to click the “I am not a robot” widget is valid – you penalize the real people, and you don’t keep out #2 above.
