Hearing ‘High Sierra’ possibility is a big relief. I thought you were starting with Mojave, and that would leave me in the dust. I am not able to plan any major hardware update in the near/not so near future.

I use Freeway for all my websites and have since version 4. You don’t need to add new bells & whistles to it, just make it 64-bit and I’ll be happy.

Hi, DB just converting freeway which is being written in swift (latest apple language) from Carbon (there is no 64-bit version) is a massive undertaking… basically you have to rewrite all the code again and that is an enormous effort!! To say its time consuming is a HUGE understatement. I will be shocked and surprised if the first version of the new Freeway 8 or Phenix 1 or whatever it will be called has anywhere near the number of controls as the original in its initial release. So even if it’s close to the original, then I would be over the moon. But the good news to all those wondering if this is even possible. Well, Softpress has had to rewrite a lot of the application before, and this was when Apple went from the old classic system & power pc based programs to the newer OSX operating systems. So if anyone can do it… I am confident they can

Interesting to hear FWP7 running in Mojave - I just got a 2019 iMac and it’s failing to run.
I would gladly boot to a Chronosync bootable backup running Sierra - but it’s unsupported on the new Mac. I’ve been considering getting a Mac Mini to cover the legacy programs I’ve lost (in particular FW) but you’re saying FW should work?
I might need to find the DMG installer and reinstall then?

What does it do when it fails? Are you trying to open an existing project or are you just launching the application? If it’s the former, there might be a problem with the project itself and you should try launching FW7 itself. I know that doesn’t help with the existing project but it would let us know where the problem is.

Every time I tried to launch the program it crashed on the new box. And this was after having done a migration! Opening directly from the Applications folder - not a project file. I tried several times.
Of course now I’m shaking my head… I just tried to launch it again - to make a copy of the crash report - and it worked! From there I was able to run my project files no problem. Alrighty then! ha

Oh well. It’s always too bad when that happens in a way because whatever caused it can’t be isolated and eliminated. OTOH, you’re back up and running and hopefully it will stay that way. Maybe it was a restart or something similar that cleared out whatever was causing the issue.

Can you tell us if your ultimate goal, as stated below, will happen during the first half of 2020 or will it take longer?
I need to replace my 2015 iMac. I can wait another year, but if it is going to take longer I may buy it sooner.

We are planning to release a public beta later this year, but it will take longer than that before the new version replicates all of Freeway’s current functionality and is able to read existing Freeway files.
Our goal is to provide a complete replacement for the current version of Freeway - but it will take us a while to get there.

I just bought a 2013-era Mac Pro “trash can” for < $2,000 on eBay. That will run El Capitan, Sierra, High Sierra, Mojave, and the upcoming Catalina. It came fully maxed out, with a 1TB SSD, 64 GB of RAM, and replaced a 2008 Mac Pro “cheese grater” that I had been babying forever. That Mac was stuck on El Cap, and so I had already lost the benefit of security updates whenever Mojave came out. (Apple supports the last two major versions only.) Since I wasn’t going to pop for a 2019 Mac Pro “cheese chunker”, I figured this was the next best thing, since I didn’t want to move to an all-in-one form factor. I figure this extends my runway for a fair few years (it’s a fully 64-bit machine) since it shows signs of being babied all its life, and I keep my office cold like a data center anyway.

Hi Alvaro,
There could be a transition period when you might want to have a pre-Catalina version of macOS to run Freeway 7 (or other 32-bit software). You could either keep your existing iMac to do that, or you could buy a new machine before Catalina becomes the default macOS for new machines, and keep Mojave on a separate partition or disk.
I think that it may also be possible to run Mojave in VM on a Catalina machine, but you will need to have a Mojave installer if you do that, and Apple might make it difficult for people to download Mojave when Catalina is released.
