[Pro] Problem Updating Site - Multiple Local Folders

I’ve been on the phone with GoDaddy all day trying to figure out why I can’t update my site. They apparently aren’t familiar with Freeway (but they darned well were a few months ago when I had a separate issue).

I’ve adjusted my site and added files but in the process, have created several local folders with “save as” versions. I’m not very knowledgable about web creation so I don’t know what to do.

Is there a way to save a brand new version of the site, disregard previous versions and just upload fresh and overwrite?

Any advice welcome!

created several local folders with “save as” versions

Can you explain your thoughts as to why you did this?

Is there a way to save a brand new version of the site, disregard previous versions and just upload fresh and overwrite?

If you go into File>Document Setup under the first Tab (Document) there is a line that starts ‘Site Folder’

Immediately under this there is a ‘Select’ button. Use the Select button to choose a new Site Folder to publish your html files into . (Create this new folder in the Finder first ie Oct-13-site-folder)

Now when you publish you will get a fresh copy of all your html and associated files in the new site folder.

The next step depends on how you are currently uploading your site.

If you have been using a 3rd party FTP app like Cyberduck/Transmit etc. then you should use that same app to go into the server and delete all FW generated files before using FW’s built in upload facility to upload your fresh version.

If you have only used FW to upload then no clear out should be required. (Unless you have uploaded from more than 1 FW doc)

Thanks David!

The multiple folders are a result of bad housekeeping.

In the past, I used Godadyy’s Java FTP client. Over the last few days - under their direction - I’ve tried that again as well as Filezilla. No luck.

The problem is that on both my local drive and Godaddy’s end, I don’t know which files are important and which files are superfluous.

I tried wiping out the files on the hosting side and then adding them all fresh from my current local folder for the site (I did as you suggested - and specified a local folder to publish them to under File>Document Setup) but alas, no luck. I don’t know what files I’m missing - presumably, they’re in one of the several folders I’ve created along the way. I also don’t know what it should look like on the Godaddy side as far as parent and subfolders goes.

I’m going to wipe out the files on Godaddy hosting, open a new project with Freeway and copy the content from my existing project and hopefully be able to publish new. Not holding my breath though…

Thoughts?

Thanks big time for the advice btw - much appreciated.

Not necessary.

Just delete everything on GD (using an FTP app) and use FW to upload a fresh copy. No new project required.

I tried that yesterday and it didn’t work. I suspect some files are missing from the new local folder - I know it’s unlikely but maybe FW is referencing old folders for some files?

Or else I did something wrong uploading to GD… but I cleared everything out before trying to add new.

It’s frustrating because I’m fairly computer literate but I find web design requires a lotta effort. I enjoy learning but aside from publishing a site, I spend hours on Google trying to figure out how to add things to the site. On that subject, the reason I want to update the site is so that I can add mp3 files but that’s been a huge headache. I know you’re supposed to be able to drag and drop - might be because I’m not testing through the actual site but when I do a browser preview (before publishing / uploading) there’s no sign of the mp3 I added.

That is why I am suggesting that you use FW’s built in FTP - it doesn’t get it wrong. As long as you have the correct details in the Upload section of File>Document Setup you will be GTG

Here is a typical setup

Not sure what GD’s default is in the Directory field - worth checking that one

O… I confirmed FTP details as you showed.

Wiped out all files accept the “Apache Logs” folder on FTP (because it wouldn’t let me) and uploaded fresh from FW. Getting an error when I try to access the site…

“NOT FOUND. The requested URL /Dooley Media Works/ was not found on this server.”

And under that, in the same window…

“Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. Apache Server at dooleymediaworks.com Port 80”

I feel like I’m chasing my tail!

First, no folder in your entire site (or file, for that matter) should include any spaces or punctuation characters besides the underscore _ or dash - or dot . in their name.

With that out of the way, the next thing you need to determine is whether there is an index page in the folder you are trying to navigate to. Look in your Site Folder on your Mac. Make certain there is a file in the top level of that folder that is named exactly index.html. Now, look into any sub-folder of the Site Folder, and confirm that each of those folders also include the index.html file.

Finally, on your server, use the awful GoDaddy tools to create a new test site, and see what, if any, folders it places in the account root folder. Usually this is named htdocs or public_html – the actual name does not mean anything at all, but it must match whatever your server is configured to expect. My guess here is that you deleted that folder when you cleaned out your server root. /logs and /whateverthesitefolderiscalled would normally be peers of one another within your “home” folder (the folder you see when you log into your server with FTP or SFTP).

Good news!

I got a very helpful person on the phone from GoDaddy tech support and they got my site up and running.

Unfortunately, I’m not sure why I was having problems because the fix was to switch servers when I renewed my hosting plan from monthly to yearly.

Thank you for your help, I’m really glad this forum exists. I hope to post again - hopefully I can return the favour and help other people once I learn more!

As long as they have not altered any of your html files on the server as FW will overwrite any changes the next time you upload.

Oh boy, maybe I will be adding to the thread sooner than I hoped!

So far so good…

Thanks again!

Could it be Linux hosting now but Windows hosting before? Always go for Linux.
