I would like to create a menu like this using Freeway Pro. Can someone please point me in the right direction?
Background: I am teaching myself Freeway by recreating this web site. I am an experienced print designer with virtually no web skills (yet!!). I’ve heard that Freeway is great for those like me who have strong Quark/InDesign chops. So far it seems to be true!
Thanks in advance.
ps – Would love to hear from someone with similar experience who’s been through it.
in your browser go to view source and it will show you the code for
the whole page. This will give you a clue - look for the first
instance of the word “menu” and you’ll see how they used Rollover
{ mouseover and mouseoff} actions tied to the link and image
Tutorial 3 in the Usin gFreeway manual from the help menu takes you
through the basics of setting up a rollover

At the heart of the menu are the Rollover and Target image actions.
All of the nav bar images (menu, reviews, contact us, etc) have the
Rollover action applied and are told to swap themselves for the over
version (the red text version) when the user mouses over them. In
addition to this they each send a message to the picture box at the
foot of the menu to load an image. This control mechanism (previously
known as slaves and now called targets) is very powerful and allows
you to trigger multiple things when your menu item is rolled over or
clicked.
Download the Freeway 5 Pro file and have a dig around and hopefully,
along with the manual, you’ll soon discover how easy and powerful
Freeway can be.
Be sure to ask questions if you get stuck.
Regards,
Tim.

That breeze I felt before must have been you running circles around me!
I just looked at what you did and I’m feeling rather blown away… please tell me you weren’t also texting your friends and watching a film while you redid my site!
MANY THANKS for your help, Tim. I’m very grateful indeed.
Putting that simple page together didn’t take long at all because when
I saw the original site I knew instantly the name of the actions that
would allow me to recreate the effect myself.
After you’ve build a few web sites you tend to look at other sites
differently - I know I certainly do - and mentally wonder how they
tick and piece, by piece pull them apart just to see how they run.
Once you know how a few of these basics work (rollovers, target
images, forms, etc) they start to become corner stones of other
projects.
Have fun exploring!
Regards,
Tim.

Well there is a master page (Master 1) but it is blank. I often design
on a regular page like this and then when the page is correct create a
master using the Page/ Make Master menu.
It means I can easily preview the page in a browser without having to
make a master and child first.

Tim.

PS - What I mean is, when I open your version in FWP, there is no
Master Page. Thanks.
I also come from a print background using Quark and InDesign. Freeway lets you work pretty much the same way as a page layout program. Just keep in mind that deep down it is NOT a page layout program and your pages aren’t going to print.
Just as in print jobs, organization is key. I try to keep all the art and images in the Media folder that Freeway provides. You an organize within that folder however you like. Just make sure everything is accessed from that folder. (Like your Links folder in InDesign.)
You can bring in AI and PSD files and Freeway will convert them to web ready graphics. You will probably want to alter the settings which you can do from the palette.
Definitely go through the tutorial. It will show you how to do most things that you would want to do just starting out.
Thank you Bob. Most encouraging! Did you do third-party tutorials as well as tutorials from Softpress? Or did you stick with the “official” Softpress tutorials?
Well, when I ran into a problem, basically something I didn’t know how to do, I would look at some that are on the Softpress site. Also, ones from the folks on here like Dan Jasker.
I use quite a few Actions, also, to get things done. Wonderful, helpful Action writers here, too. Always willing to help and also take suggestions.
I’m currently working through Dan’s Screencasts. And as you say, everyone here is so helpful. I’m a little overwhelmed at the moment (only two weeks in) but encouraged by all you “pros”.
