[Pro] Responsive Video

I am using FWp 7, and working with responsive layout.

Some of my pages (see the example) have large videos.

Do I just resize these in Freeway? Do I have to make a resized version of the video for each of the page sizes?

Just wondered if you achieved a resolution to this issue at all?
Resizing the large youtube and vimeo videos on a page is something I am trying to resolve whilst still having a responsive element in the design.

There is an action for that http://actionsforge.com/actions/responsive-video

Hello Dave,

Thanks for this. I have tried this but the videos appear on page at a too large size for what I am wanting and there is nothing within the action to define the size.

I suppose I may be able to define this size using the measurements and dimensions?
Your guidance would be much appreciated.

Thanks for now

Anthony

Are you scaling the video container? ie as an inline element at a % of the width of its container.

Hello again dave,

I have a couple of youtube videos which I am using the youtube video action on and setting them at a fixed size which works at all page sizes.
I also have a couple of vimeo hosted videos which I have in the responsive video action which again are set at a fixed size (300px x 225px) but which appear on the default page as very large sizes.
I am wanting to contain them for consistency across each page size.
They are placed inline within a html item.

Hope this explains things a bit more.

To me, not at all - honestly.

Using β€œresponsive” as synonym for dynamic and β€œfixed” in one sentence is strange, showing that people are still struggling with the basic purpose of adaptive web-design.

But whatsoever - in todays web-landscape, there are properties like min and max-width that are targeting issues like those.

The action works as expected:

It removes any width attributes and enables us to place it however we want - as long we are aware of what we are doing.

Cheers

Thomas

Can you share a link so that we can check them out?

Hello David and Thomas, thanks for your support.

Thomas, I admit that I am not completely expert with most things but I am learning by such exercises and inputs as this. I strive to attain greater understanding all the time.

David, and anyone else, I include a link to a copy of the page.
It was getting a bit messy. However the idea of constraining the size of each video to a uniform size was in order that I could set them out in a tidy manner.

The bottom two vimeo videos are responsive and the top three are using the youtube action with a fixed size.

I think the sizing and alignment issues are something I have maybe gotten a bit confused with. I’ve been away for a bit and am just getting back into things so forgive me if the errors are as plain as the nose on my face.

Any help direction is most welcome.

Try removing the max-width 300px attribute from summerhall2 and use the % width of the container to constrain it.

Thanks for getting back to me.

I’ve removed the 300px attribute. With this removed then the video extends the full width of the container. No matter what % width value I put in it stays at the full width.

What should the width be set at? Fixed, Fixed %, Flexible etc?

I thought I knew what I was doing but this is something simple that I am not getting here.

With this removed then the video extends the full width of the container.

So set the % width of the container to suit your layout - assuming that it has a parent container.

So the Responsive video action needs to go inside a html item/container then?

Yes, unless you want it to become the same size as the browser window (or the page, if you have sized that element). That’s the point of it.

I have updated the file and have gained a fairly fundamental insight into what I should be doing regards responsive site construction. Thanks for the help.

The flexible containers take a bit of getting used to but so far I am progressing things with this lesson learned.

I see that by aligning to centre that there is no option to be flexible with your container. Why is this?

Thanks again

If you want a Div (container) to be centred in another Div you want to set the Margin to Custom and center it in there ie Margin Left: Auto and Margin Right: Auto

Thanks for that.
I have placed a passthrough graphic in a div and want it to retain the same size but be centred at the same size in all media views. I’ve been trying out what I thought were the more obvious settings but I think I may have missed something.

Sorry to be a pest with this. Most other things I am getting to grips with but this one is not quite working for me.

The graphic is the signature at the top of the existing page.

If you get the chance I 'd appreciate any guidance.

Thanks again

A bit like this

http://deltadesign.co/FW7Test//responsive-video.html

However I haven’t waste much time tweaking the % size of the logo containers at difffering BPs

Insert Html item, set margin (Margin Left: Auto and Margin Right: Auto) to center the Div in its parent, import image asPass Through, adjust % width of container at each BP (it will have a flexible width after import) to maintain actual size.

Hello again Dave,

I have been trying to set this up but appear to be meeting an issue.

I have inserted the html div, centred it with fixed width & height and the margins et to centre and auto left & right.
I then import the pass through graphic from the import prompt and the settings on the div change to Align Baseline, height and width both flexible and margins the same as before.

When previewed in browser or freeway or in any other media size then the graphic floats left and cannot be moved.

Any thoughts? I have uploaded the file for your interest if you have the time.

many thanks again.

Nope

margins et to centre and auto left & right.

Yes

But just in Margins

the settings on the div change to Align Baseline, height and width both flexible

Change the width to fixed% and adjust per Breakpoint.

At the moment item13 (the image container) has a fixed width of 940px - resize it to a percentage that will display your image at the sixe you want.
