[Pro] Rollover Frustrations

Forgive my double posting. Walter is trying to help and either I’m not following his instructions well or there is some other issue.

The problem is with one section of this page:

Scroll down to the bottom part of the page where it says tea pots, brew mugs, infusers & more… The rollovers in this one section work perfectly — but only the 1st time through. The rollovers work if you start at warmers and move one at a time down the list. However, if you try to go back up to warmers (from say tea mugs) the warmers will not reappear. This error continues down the list.

I’m sure I’m missing something simple, but I’m not seeing it. I’ve tried re-ordering my groups, reassigning mouseover #s & commands (sticky/toggle, etc), putting all the items in the same color group, and messing with the CSS layering, but I’m not getting anywhere. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Try making a new page, and simplify things a lot. Make one set of rollovers, confirm that they do what you want. Then duplicate that and change the trigger/target numbers so they don’t overlap. See if that works. Continue until it breaks.

This is always difficult to diagnose without the actual FW doc but as you have done it successfully in the section above surely it is a case of duplicating the settings you have in there?

As a rule of thumb I use a base layer with no action on it and then the others to appear layered on top set as Initially Hidden, Restore Sticky

Hi David & Walter,

I appreciate the idea of starting on a fresh page. That simple thought had not occurred to me. Unfortunately, I’m having the exact same problem on a new page.

David, I would have thought the same as you, duplicate the section above, switch out the color triggers and add the thumbnails to give me the extra views I need. Unfortunately, that seems to be complicating things. I wonder if there is another action I can use to accomplish this?

I’m really scratching my head on this one!

Well, for starters, the page is 2.8 MB, and that’s pretty huge. But the thing is, I am not seeing any errors that would explain the issue you are having. As for another way to do this, I’m sure I could write something in Protaculous that would be robust in the browser, but it would remain a pretty manual job to set it up, same as Rollover/Target is.

Getting back to the page size, have you considered making two pages, and splitting the products across them? That would get each one closer to a more ideal page size, although still probably not below 1MB.

Hi Walter,

I have considered splitting the products across two pages. My client prefers less pages generally, which led to this complex system of show/hide target layers to begin with throughout the site. If I can get it working on two pages, I’ll tell her that is just the way it needs to be. But right now I can’t get it working even on it’s own page.

What I don’t understand is it works the first time through just fine (so long as you start at the top of the list), but the layers “below” will not reappear unless I refresh the browser page. (Incidently, the uploaded page you are looking at has each product in it’s own ‘color’ freeway group. But when I put them all in the same group I had the effect I told you about in the other thread).

Perplexing…

Hi Doty

I have just had a similar problem, but not with a rollover, it was with text moving to where it should not be and no matter what I did I could not fix the problem. I had copied and pasted text from another page and then altered the words that had to change. In the end, it was just much better to delete that page and start again and now the pages works perfectly well.

The lesson I learned - don’t copy the previous page, just match up the x and y axis settings to ensure uniformity.

That’s my thought for today!
