[Pro] RSS image feed

Hi,

can the RSS Feed action be used to create a feed from a folder of images (images either already on a server or uploaded via FW) ?

I don’t believe it can do this from a folder full of images, you would have to make a page for each image in order to get that Action to do anything. There may be a server-side solution available – the problem is so simple from a technical level that I have to believe it’s been well-solved a few times. Have a look a http://hotscripts.com and see if you turn up anything free-or-nearly.

Hi walter,

thanks for the reply and thanks for the link. There are a couple of things on there that look promising. Notably, Revolver.

I’m really just trying to replicate the MobileMe screensaver service that will end in a few months. Amazing that it was so simple on a Mac but I guess overall, few people have used it. I have no idea how many subscribe to my screensaver, because there’s no way of knowing, but anecdotally, I’m aware of quite a few.

Could you post a link to the feed that you are currently sending? If I can look at it in its raw XML form, I might be able to make a suggestion or two.

Walter,

this is the screensaver built-in to MacOSX, going back to very early days. It started with .Mac and then became MobileMe. I don’t know how you can read the code, or how the Mac draws the images down.

If you go to this page on my site on any Mac (NOT running developer release for 10.8, which has the code removed) then I have a page which shows how to configure a Mac for my screensaver (or anyone else’s).

It looks as though any standard photo blog feed may be added by using the RSS option in place of the MobileMe option in the screensaver preferences. Once the MobileMe server shuts down, all of your viewers will need to change this anyway, so there’s no issue making a new source now and telling all your new users about it – then you can update your existing visitors when it becomes absolutely necessary. I just tried this with the DesignSpiration feed, and I got a nice slideshow. Generating this type of feed from a folder full of photos is pretty simple stuff. I’ll see if I can find a good example to work from.
