Ah. I just downloaded that from Apple years ago. They compressed it, in other words. They definitely know what they are doing in that regard. (Most regards, actually.)

oh- just to show the SLB2?

some people will see how well it plays (and quick etc) and want to do the same with their .mov but will see I guess it will not work like that one…

so what did people do to show a video easily on their site before sublime player (which looks like the action just came out in March and the directions are real involved)?

DId people just link to vimeo/youtube?

I can;t believe how challenging it is to just have a video play in site that is for mac and pc and play easily in most to all browsers. I am sure I am missing something.

sorry if I am frustrating ya today.

Always has been. Video files are giant files in general which creates a bandwidth problem for web hosts as well as for browsers with slow network connections. Broadband has become the defacto standard finally, but it is still not universal.

Video quality is a multi headed beast. The end quality of a file is determined not only by it’s delivery codec (wmv or mp4 for example) but also by the codec that was originally used when it was created. All consumer grade video is compressed right out of the camera before it ever gets to a computer which automatically reduces the quality right there. Then converting it to yet another codec for download adds more quality degradation because of the nature of image compression.

Bottom line with video is you want to convert it only once for best quality. Practically speaking of course that is not always possible, and in your circumstance you are using older existing content. Because of that you are not going to get the best quality video possible or perhaps not even acceptable.

Walt’s Apple file example was tweaked to the extreme by Apple in order to get to play back at a decent speed at that time (file is dated 2003 to be precise) with a really low bit rate of only 700.

A couple of software options that Walt didn’t mention is using Flip4Mac MWV to convert the file to Quicktime. Another program I like which is a really cheap interface for the FFmpeg utility which is free, although can a bit fiddly, is iFFmpeg.
In the end you are going to have to experiment with settings for end quality and make multiple attempts till you find the best compromise. Considering what your starting from you should probably stick with Quicktime native .mov file as the most foolproof choice.

Great read Chuck - appreciate it.

I was leaning towards Vimeo until I just realized that my school blocks youtube and Vimeo so the students will not be able to see the videos (which are of the students) ever at school.

I will have to find a way to play direct as you mentioned and compress it down.

Could you please see the settings in this program I am using to convert from .wmv to .mov.

when you hit this link you will see a screenshot of the settings- any reccommendtions you can make to make it smaller and quicker?

there is also 3 test videos I am trying to show you were I am at.

Chuck, Walt, Dave or the video Gods.

Why is a 28mb .wmv file convert to over 100mB .mov file?

just wondering?

And if I adjust the bitrate setting in my converter I notice the mbs drop. Will I lose much quality in your opinion?

As I mentioned earlier, wmv is a highly-compressed format, with very low quality to go with. If you convert to another format that has a higher bit-rate or takes a “quality over file-size” approach to its files, then the file size will be larger. Note carefully though – there won’t be any new quality added. You’ll just have a very high quality reproduction of the original noisy movie. Algorithms cannot tell noise from detail. This is why if you keep saving a JPEG of a JPEG of a JPEG, eventually the file will get larger, not smaller.

If you have installed the Flip4Mac CODECs in your local copy of QuickTime, and you have purchased the QuickTime Pro key from the Apple Store, you can open this WMV file in QuickTime Player, and then start experimenting with the export options made available to you through the QTP key. (If you see a lot of grayed-out options with [PRO] only flags in your menus, then you haven’t done this yet. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, it’s also possible that you haven’t installed QuickTime 7 on your Mac, and are using QuickTime X instead.)

Anyway, one more thing to get you started: it is easy – too easy – to come up with a combination of video and audio CODECs that will work on your Mac and a handful of other similar Macs, and nowhere else. There are some combinations of CODECs that are more universal in nature. Google is your friend. If you use the “easy” export options in QuickTime Pro’s “Export for Web” menu item, you will be guided gently to MPEG-4 and AAC (like the G5 commercial). This will play nearly everywhere that QuickTime 7 or better is installed. Further, this combo will work with the SublimePlayer out of the box. But if you have to support older browsers or plug-ins, then you may need something like Sorenson Video 3 and QDesign Music 2. Try variations, test everywhere. It’s not a simple process and you can’t expect it to work everywhere.

Ok… a must read…

First I have to say I was moments away from writing this with practically tears of joy from how far I got and what I learned and discovered from Walt and his explanation.
Walt is truly a gift.

I will describe all including when all changed…

  1. I installed Quicktime 7 (even though I already had quicktime 10).

  2. I purchased for $33 Quicktime PRO 7 to work with quicktime 7 and I installed it and it played my .wmv video as I got ready to convert etc…
(in case anyone needs this, when the .wmv video was playing for first time in QTpro, I went to the menu to export and save as they were greyed out. You must have the video fully loaded through to get these options to light)

  3. I followed the save as directions for converting wmv to .mov format and my 33mb .wmb only grew to about 60mb (not bad!)

  4. I had heard about a QUICKSTART feature in PRO that helps it play much faster on the internet and I made sure it was enabled.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2438

  5. I did NOT compress the file at all for 2 reasons. (1- I wanted to see if maybe I could not compress and the quickstart would just go and speed things up w/o me reducing the size and quality and 2) it mentioned something with Flip4mac pro; so I i didn’t compress)

  6. I then brought this 60mb file over in my FTP and went to my Freeway page - used Scriptylightbox2 and target it and uploaded my page to test it out…

NOW THE BEST PART…

  1. I tested the real deal on the internet and it loaded quick and played beautifully with no change in quality.
  2. I tested in safari, Chrome, Firefox, opera…

All were as quick and beautiful playing as I could have hoped. I was really so moved by how great things went on my MAC…

UNTIL…

I went to my wife’s PC to test it all out again.

opera, firefox, chrome, IE, ALL DID NOT PLAY on her PC. Combination of plugins missing, links to get updates for quicktime, etc…

however:
the following .mov video DOES play from apple on her PC with no problem

http://scripty.walterdavisstudio.com/lightbox2

I am not sure if the above .mov plays on all browsers of PC and my .mov does not has to do with Apple’s compression of some sort or the SLB playing it direct (as opposed to me which used a target in SLB2)?

I think I realize now that all went so well in the beginning becausee I had installed the quicktime program on my mac that my very own website needed. No wonder it worked so well.

So now???

I hope I am in a better place but I hope to not hear… “oh well it just won;t work on PC and mac evenly and the visitors have to update plugins etc.” I can;t use vimeo/youtube for blockage at school reasons.

anxious to see what awaits.

Here is my page as it is right now-to see me working .mov, just click the colored pict of me under TEST 1 in the middle of smartboard.

http://hoffkids.com/FWtest/testvideo.html

THANKS ahead of time for any advice on how to proceed!!!

update:

  1. I tried having FREEWAY upload my new 60mb .mov and it did it. THis is good because I do not have to use my standalone FTP program and also, Walt’s SLB2 auto plays it when I have it see file direct as opposed to target. That was good news.

  2. As a test, I uploaded the .mov file that APPLE made that walt used right next to mine and tested on PC. Of course theirs works, mine does not,

my conclusion so far…

It is my .mov file. Maybe I have to do somthing to it??? I have done nothing to it since bringing the .wmv file into Quicktime Pro and saving as .mov

hmmmm

much progress…

I went back and reread what Walt wrote and I pulled up my .wmv file in QUicktime Pro and exported for WEB and did it as .m4v file.

THis file played on ALL mac and PC (even though on an older version of WIndows XP I needed to update to Quicktime 7 for windows, I am sure newer systems have it already).

The only annoyance is now I have to pay another $25 for FLIP4MAC as I convert in Quicktime pro. So the whole thing costs like $60 or so but seems to work well.

I will hold off purchasing the FLIP4MAC Pro thing until I hear back from someone.

A good night overall.

Thanks!

Sounds like you’ve found the combination. I thought you had Flip4Mac already. If you don’t, then buy it. The key, as you’ve discovered, is having a suitably universal codec. You’ll need Flip4Mac yo read those occasional wmv files, and you will want to export with h.264 and AAC encoding.

Ok Walt,

I will buy the FLip4Mac PRO and I expect all to be pretty good for these .wmv to .m4v files playing real quickly in your SLB2 via quicktime.

Did you get a chance to just try it out on your end and confirm it looks and works good?

I will send you the end result tonight.

Hi Walt,

Here is an update and a question.
All videos looked like going well from last point, until I had a student try it at home. Actually she tests the new site at her house to ensure all is good.

When she tried the videos it said she neeeded a plugin. Now I did not totally confirm her system with her but I am assuming she has a PC that maybe just isn;t as new as my wife’s. My wife has Windows 7 and the test student may have something a little older. It told her to install a plugin (I am assuming quicktime).

I can also see this being a problem at our school where even though we are pretty high-tech, they have not moved from Windows XP still.

Anyway… here is my new idea.

I see your SLB2 also supports .SWF. I understand this would play easily on PC, macbooks, etc just not ipads and iphones (iOS).

I tested it and it worked quick on wife’s PC and macbook and my windows side of Macbookpro (I have VM fusion).

My 2 questions are,
when I play the .SWF video in your SLB2 I do not get it playing in a “player” just a box. No fast forward/rewind or time showing. It just plays and you are kinda locked in. Is this the way it has to be?

click VIDEO test 3 to see this…

http://hoffkids.com/FWtest/testvideo.html

Also if I use this .SWF because it works so well for 2/3 probable situations (mac, pc, ipads/iphone) what do you think about just having another link under each graphic for ipad/iphone users?

Thanks for your input.

ADVICE needed!!! not flash related

A few posts ago you will see things were going well as I had been trying SLB2 and using .m4v video files.

They played on mac and wife’s PC laptop with WIn 7. A student then tested and reported back she needed a plugin. I was dissapointed to find out she had a NEW system with windows 7.

before I convert all my .wmv over to .m4v, I could either

  1. Put a big hyperlinked logo of QUICKTIME at the top of my videos so people can update their system

or

  1. is there another format that might increase the likelihood that more people will be able to play the video?

ex. will .mp4 be more able to be seen than .m4v for example?

Any advice would be loved.

Thanks
