[Pro] ScriptyLightBox2 Won't Let Me Post Video

Greetings,

Received the video back from the vid guy, trying to post it for the client. Used ScriptyLightBox2 inside an HTML box with a background graphic & 2 little graphics on top with actions affixed to make them ScriptyLightBox triggers for the video in 2 formats - MP4 & SWF. The site uploaded fine, & the vids went up too, but they won’t load when clicked.

When I look at Walter’s page ScriptyLightbox2

Clicking his thumbnail opens the video player window & shows the controller. When I click my thumbnail a window opens, but no controller. The MP4 link opens a black box of the prescribed size, with the dreaded Question Mark Q for missing QuickTime codec. However, behind the ?Q is a spinning wheel, which makes you think it’s loading, it never does, it just spins forever. Yet the vid plays in those same browsers in preview mode from Freeway. Clicking the Flash thumbnail also opens a black box, but no progress bars, spinning loaders or controls, nor any video.

Both the thumbnails show links in the browser’s status bar, that are correct, corresponding with the correct videos in the site’s Resource folder. So why won’t anything work?

I’ve read a bunch of ScriptyLightBox threads, but to no avail. I’ve read the ActionForge page, no help there either. There was a section for suggestions, but I don’t think this membership works there… or does it? I would have suggested they add WMV so our poor friends on peecee can watch videos too.

I really don’t want to have to use YouTube embedded video & subject the client’s site to adverts & the crap that invariably follows your video when they have it. But if I can’t get Freeway to host the video… I’ll have no other choice than to go with YouTube… hope not.

Here’s my page http://2studiob.ca/video.html

Please help me…
thank you

Ok, it appears that the SWF file does load when the Flash thumbnail is chosen, but the video looks horrible, the resolution is greatly compromised or some such degradation. Also there is no controller, pause or play. The SWF just plays & loops. So I’m guessing that the MP4 video needs to be of a different codec to work with ScriptyLightBox2. Any suggestions? Maybe it can’t be H264 or something like that?
Also, is there anyway of posting a WMV in Freeway?

thanks

Sorry to keep answering my own thread… but it seems that both versions of the video (MP4 & Flash) work in Firefox. MP4 looks a million times better, yes a million.

So… the MP4 wouldn’t work in iCab or Safari. Should I up the MP4 in another codec? Maybe make the frame size a bit smaller so it doesn’t take half an hour to load? The ActionsForge page says ScriptyLB handles MOV, M4V, MP4 & SWF. Since SWF looks like crud, should I try MOV? But then won’t that be problematic for windoze people? How about M4V, isn’t that for iPhones & iPads? I wan’t to be able to reach those poor saps on peecee… anyone?

Sorry… gave up. Went with YouTube. Sad about it, but the video has to go up for the client. I might try to spend some more time on it tomorrow, but other projects are behind now too…

Nothing is easy…

thanks anyway

(PS - if anyone has some good links for info on posting videos without youtube or vimeo, but right inside Freeway, perhaps with choices for MP4 or WMV, please post the links here so I can learn about it. Probably others would like that info too… ) hugs

I’ve read your whole plight, sorry you had such an issue with what
should have been simple.

Whenever this happens, try making a spare page in Freeway and simply
drag the video to the page. If it plays there (in Preview mode or a
browser) then it should work in ScriptyLightbox2.

When I look at Walter’s page ScriptyLightbox2

Clicking his thumbnail opens the video player window & shows the

spinning loaders or controls, nor any video.

My example page is using MOV, and I tested it “bare” in a browser by
dragging the movie into the browser window first to make sure that it
would play without trouble. That’s another trick you could try. Not
getting the controls leads me to think that it’s engaging the
QuickTime X plugin, but the movie either isn’t coded for fast start,
or it’s in some janky codec that isn’t a part of the normal
complement. H264 is a normal codec, all Macs can play it (within
reason).

Both the thumbnails show links in the browser’s status bar, that are
correct, corresponding with the correct videos in the site’s
Resource folder. So why won’t anything work?

I don’t expect that will happen, I really don’t think it’s necessary.
Most PCs have QuickTime, because most PC owners have iPods. The
QuickTime code in the Action will also call the ActiveX controller for
QuickTime as a last resort, which means it loads immediately into the
browser from Apple’s server and the movie plays.

THis is a very helpful thread since I am starting my next part of my site which is putting in videos for the first time in Freeway. I have large (12mb–>45mB) .WMV videoes.

from this I gather I should…

-convert my .wmv to .mov
-use SLB2 (hope no conflict with other actions)- needed to leave original SLB due to conflicts (undetermined cause).

Going along with this thread… can anyone please reccomend how to BEST convert my .wmv to .mov for little to no loss in quality?

thanks!!!

There are vanishingly few cameras that capture in wmv – it’s a very lossy format. Converting it to another format would be less than ideal. Look for the original, which will probably be in mov or another lightly-compressed format. Then use Sorenson Squeeze, Apple Compressor, or just QuickTime pro to convert to mp4.

If that’s what you have, then you’ll have to take what you get. Use one of the apps I recommended.

Dave,

so far pretty good.
I found a great program that converted my .wmv to .mov with no problem- used your SLB2 and all great so far in preview except.

my video went from 29mB as .wmv to 110mb for .mov

is this normal and will it be a problem?
FW timed out so I am using my FTP.

Thanks,

barry

ok new problem.

Cannot get the 100mb video to upload.
So I moved it over manually in my FTP, but whenever I hit UPLOAD in FW it always gets stuck trying to move this video file over (which I moved already in FTP).

I went and deleted it from everywhere I could think including the resources folder but it just keeps puting it back there since it is in my site.

help needed.

I’m stuck

Thanks,

barry

If it is referenced in the FW page as being a local file then FW will continue to try to upload it until you tell it differently.

Change the setting in the action to Use Page/URL as Target and then use an external link to where the uploaded file is on the server (where on the server did you put it?)

So the link should be something like http://www.hoffkids.com/videos/myvideo.mp4

Dave,

not playing as of yet this way.

in the action settings I did what you said and have…
“use page/url as target” checked and have

http://www.hoffkids.com/VideosHoffkids/2009-2010fixed.mov

I get a quicktime logo with a question mark.

Here is what is above when I preview in browser…

file:///Users/Barry/HoffkidsWebSite/site%20folder/testvideo.html

I also saved and uploaded figuring maybe it would noy preview in browser because I used standalone FTP and I still get the quicktime logo with question mark.

I think I simply have something in the wrong place?

here is the link that should work…
click the picture of the little kid on the RIGHT under words TEST VIDEO.

Thanks,

Barry

This means that the plug-in does not understand the file you passed to it. It is completely possible to have a file which plays on the desktop in QuickTime Player, yet will not play in a browser.

First thing to understand, MOV is a container format. It doesn’t mean anything besides the fact that QuickTime should try to play it. Think of it like a milk carton vs. the milk inside. There are a dizzying variety of different CODECs (compressor / decompressor algorithms) available inside MOV.

The only one that is known to work across a really wide variety of browsers/plug-in versions is H.264 MP4. Choose that one, and try again. Your exported file will have the .mp4 file-type extension.

so Walt I should use the same program that I (almost bought) which I converted my .wmv to .mov, but I should use it to convert from .wmv to h.264 .mp4?

I want it to work exactly like your SLB2 example.
I tried yours on my mac, wife;s pc, all worked.

I thought you said yours was an .mov file; that is why I converted to that. Did you use .mov or h.264 .mp4?

thanks,

Barry

I said your destination should be mp4, and that you should go looking for an mov as the original. You would need to convert mov to mp4 also; you’re just likely to find a higher-quality original in mov format, since many of the codecs there are geared toward movie production. Think of those as intermediate formats, like Photoshop PSD – you can’t publish them on the Web, but you definitely don’t want to store your original art in JPEG either. You would save art in PSD that represented the absolute highest quality possible for the image, and then save as or export to get a lower-quality but faster loading Web representation of that original. Horses for courses.

of course going bad…

  1. on my mac just get the quicktime logo and looks like waiting and waiitng.

Your example (which when I mouseover shows .mov) plays fine on my mac

  1. On schools pc yours plays fine, mine has problem with plugin.

  2. seems that .mp4 did not make things easier.

Can;t I just have it work as simple as yours?

I guess all would if the .mov file was not 100mb and freeway could just upload it?

http://hoffkids.com/FWtest/testvideo.html

is this a file format problem or where I have on server issue?

update…

not going too well :frowning:

when using .mp4 extension I checked many browsers and mac and pc and sometime si Get a message about plugin needed.

.mov seems to work for smaller file only often but takes forever to play for bigger.

I think this experience (which was a good first one) for video has led me to use vimeo or youtube for video on my site unless I am doing something wrong?
