[Pro] Serious Problem with Freeway 6

I have upgraded to Freeway 6 and launched one of my clients websites which has close to 65 pages. There are probably more than 100 existing pdf files on this site. I planned on publishing, saving and relaunching the site as I know in previous versions the first time it will want to reload all the pdf
files. I did this and went to upload the site and found that all
the “Graphic Link to PDF” files were no longer linked which will require me to relink everything. For me to do this it will take hours. Has anyone else experienced this and is there a work around or have I done something wrong.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I had a similar problem with the PHP Force Download action, but I only had to relink 4 PDFs. I couldn’t find any workaround.

Personally I prefer not to use an action like this to link and upload PDFs - especially if there are a few.

Instead I find it much easier to create a PDF folder on the server where all these files (with unique names) are FTP’d to.

Then I use an external link from my text or graphic to the file in the PDF folder.

This way I can avoid the dreaded mass upload - which usually happens when you are rushed. Individual PDFs can then be modified/updated without touching the FW file.

Can you tell me how this problem presented itself? It’s not the expected behaviour, as you can imagine, so I’m wondering if it somehow looked like the Actions broke their links when they hadn’t, or of there’s some bug at play.

Clark, I did the same. 45 linked PDFs and Word documents to download. Belive it or not: no problem.

Joe,
I launched the new Freeway 6 from my 5.5 file. I made a small type change and for the first time launching in 6 it of course wants to publish every page which it did. It then gave me the Publish Problems box. I chose not to upload the file because it said “Resource Cannot Be Found” "The following resources cannot be found. The preview image will be used instead (output quality may be lower). This actually shows more than 1,000 files that could not be found so needless to say I was very reluctant to upload the site. I still have the old 5.5 file and I guess I will have to turn off 6 and restart the old Freeway 5. You should know that before I downloaded the new version of 6 I loaded the new Mountain Lion OS. I took a screen capture of what it looks like if you want to see what I am talking about.

Thanks, Clark

Hi - I’ve been an avid user of freeway for years, mixing it up with hand coding, and have upgraded to 6 but not really done anything with it. From what I’ve read there are some issues associated with opening older site files including the issue Clerk has. I’m thinking we should hold fire before really adopting 6 into our workflow?

Good idea Paul,
I will stick with 5 for now with this particular client. I just started a site for a new client in 6 and haven’t experienced
any problems.

Thanks, Clark

That’s interesting Clerk - I’m itching to get into 6 but with deadlines and paying clients to serve time is always an issue when trying to overcome things that used to work but now need workarounds. Sure it won’t be long before 6 is perfect… Freeway is a great tool and always much better from a Designer’s point of view to work with than tinkering with lines of code!

I do not recommend delaying upgrading to 6 - just delaying using it on
legacy projects until you’ve mastered the new way of managing size and
position.

Get 6 now, start learning it now - continue to use 5 on client projects
while you use 6 to learn on practice projects. Waiting will not exempt
anyone from having to learn the new ways of working. That’s my advice.

I just found this which I never noticed before. I relaunched 5.5
and went to upload the site in question. It did the same thing telling me that files could not be found in the Publish Problems window, however in the bottom left hand corner of the window there is a “Edit Resources” button and when you launch this window it gives you type of files, status, page and publish columns. In the publish column there are check boxes. More than half of these check boxes are greyed out. In this window in the bottom left there are 2 buttons “Update All” & “Resample All”, my first thought would be to Update All but this is a huge client and making the wrong move could be disastrous. Any experience with this?

Thanks, Clark

There should be a column for Status – what do the “greyed” items indicate
under Status?

I think that your issue was created by your update to Mountain Lion and not FW6

If any files/resources are not where the FW doc thinks they should be you will get this error. If you have a new user of your computer after the upgrade or you have moved any files - hence the problem.

That is why FW creates a Media Folder for you to keep all associated files in.

Copy all the originals you are using/planning on using into the Media folder and then import them into FW from there.

That way you will know exactly where to find your ‘missing’ files and updating 1 will update them all.

It is a bad habit to get into importing from all over your HD and maybe even from external drives.

Media Folder? Are you talking Resources Folder? I have a Site Folder & Resources Folder but no Media Folder.

That’s okay. That just means you didn’t start from a template. If all of your originals were sourced from the same relative location, then using the Edit / Resources menu command and using the (click the first missing element) Locate command to find one should locate all the rest in one step.

If your originals were sourced from all over the place: some from a file server, some from a DVD that’s not in the drive any more, then you might have more of a hunt-and-peck ahead of you.

Finally, Freeway stores a proxy of each external resource in the document itself. This is NOT a full-resolution copy, but a cut-down proxy version (essentially a screenshot of the element as it is placed in Freeway’s design view) used to speed up your interaction with the layout in design mode. This proxy is recalculated each time you resample an image or publish the document, so it’s possible for it to be stored in a lower resolution than it is actually used in the site layout, so you can’t rely on it to save your bacon entirely, but it is there if you choose to use it in a pinch.

Thanks Walter,
Quite a bit was sourced from different locations but I am working my way through one at a time. In the Edit Resources
what do the Update All & Resample All buttons do?

Thanks, Clark

Once everything has been located, you would use resample all to get Freeway to update all of the proxy images to the resolution you are currently using them in your layout, and update all to check if the external resource has changed since you imported it or last published. Both of these processes happen every time you preview or publish. You can also perform them on an image-by-image basis by double-clicking an image.
