In Pro 5.6.4 if you have a site that was split over several documents, so main navigation are external links, will the Simple Site Search still work, but just have to be applied to each document? Would it pick up any content based off the external links?

SS will only work on the document/section that you applied it to and gathers the info at Publish time from the FW doc itself and not from external links.
So if section ‘products’ has SS applied then only the search from within a page in ‘products’ will provide results from products.

This could be considered a “feature” if you want to offer section-specific search.

As long as the action is applied to each separate site doc, will it work sufficiently though?
For instance, if the external CSS menu button was “Repairs”, and Repairs, and someone searched for Repairs, would at least the link come up in the search results?

Hmm! Not sure about sufficiently but it wouldn’t search across sections.
So if you were trying to do a site-wide search you would only get results from the section you were searching from.
If you wanted a site-wide search that gave all your results then in a split site like this you may be better to look at an alternative external solution.
