[Pro] Site search testing needed

Following the “search site” dynamo discussion here: http://www.freewaytalk.net/thread/view/49959 about Sphider http://www.sphider.eu/.

We’ve decided to test it on our new FW5 site here - Yes you can put this in a FW5 page  Search Site

Its probably not the best search out there, but it could prove very useful to Spider dynamic web sites like WebYeb sites. One thing I do like is the ability to spider domains to be included in your search database.

I’ve indexed another site that sells promotional merchandise to be included in this search. So you could search for “wood pencils” and it tells you the correct link.

Can anyone give it a whirl and report if anything odd happens? I could do with some real world testing and feedback.

Thanks in advance.

David

Just ran several keywords/phrases through the form, seems to be quite fast and didn’t result in any problems. Not what you would call extensive searching but I tried also with some accented vowels and blank fields, all seemed to go smoothly.

Thanks for testing Mike.

What it seems to fall down on for the user is it only reports back the
page title and keywords even though its found the content on the page.
There is an option that it will return page content if there are no
keywords in the page.

It seems very accurate, try testing for “CL54 Classic Travel Alarm
Clock” for example and it should go straight to that page.

Found the same - certainly fast, but obviously restricted to content,
of course, as I got a few no-shows for more specific terms that I
might use with a printer, e.g multi-fold, z-fold. Also ‘sales
brochures’ brought up adhesive labels and web hosting!

It seems that if you include one word in the search string that is not
indexed, it will bring up a not found result, even if the other words
are valid. i.e. it is very precise in it’s matching to the search and
not finding partial results.

Interestingly your Sphpider Admin control panel you can see the
popular searches logged. z-fold and multi-fold are not in the site so
it would not be found (its early days since the site re-launch we’ve
got lots of content to put in yet), but using the popular logged
searches you could amend the site pages to include these (Which have
now been put in and re-indexed.)

Yes, I see this returned 4 results, the last two being what looks like the same page! although the C value in the URL is different.

I actually like how smooth this seems to be, I must read the ‘Search site’ thread you linked to as this could actually be of interest to me for one of my own projects.

Yes the different domain Gift site is all run dynamically in one page
with one page title and one set of keywords which is unfortunately
confusing. Its not very noticeable the links are in fact different.

What I do like if the function of spidering other domains yet include
the results in your own site.

Mike,

I did not realise but there is and advanced search option to “AND
search” " OR Search" and “Phrase Search” There are also a
“Categories” option I need to investigate.

I’ve now included the advanced option if anyone colud test it for me

It does give a wonderful insight into how a Search Spider behaves on
your site pages. Plus its a relatively easy job to install into
Freeway pages.
