[Pro] Slideshow with Backdraft

Hi all, I’m just busy redoing a site to make it responsive and I was wondering if there’s any slideshow I should be steering clear of (or definitely using) with Backdraft?

Not understanding what uses jQuery or whatever, I’m a bit unsure of what’s compatible. I could go for a Hype animation, but that’s not really warranted, just a sliding or fading set of images would suffice.

thanks in advance.
Trev

WOW Slider would be my recommendation ATM if Exhibeo can’t fill the bill (the Slide theme is not responsive). It’s make it relatively simple to create responsive sliders and just works. IMHO, it’s overpriced, but it’s the only good solution right now unless you want to roll your own solution.

If it helps, you can see an example of a WOW slider within a site I created using Calebs excellent Backdraft template here: www.in-volve.co.uk

As Caleb mentions, its extremely easy to use but look out for promo prices as it goes up and down all the time!

Hi Neil, thanks very much for that link, it works well, and what you’ve done is exactly what I’m after.

I’ve just downloaded the freebie to have a play with and from what I can see from Calebs excellent set of instructions, to looks pretty easy to place into the page.

Could I just ask you a quick question though Neil, please? Having had a cursory look at it early this morning, it seems as though you need to size your pictures correctly before you import them int WOWSlider, or they reduce to the available height or width, you haven’t got the option of cropping within the programme. Is this correct?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Hi Trev,

I’ve had another quick look at WOW interface, and I can’t see an option for cropping within the program. I made my images to their max size in Photoshop, saved for web as PNG’s then ran them through https://tinypng.com to get them nice and small. Given time, I’d make them smaller still as the site is still in its ‘un-optimised’ state. I think I set image size as ‘custom’ in WOW, and it did the rest. Caleb’s instructions are very good.

Next challenge is to try and build a responsive slider / animation in Hype, since Hype is now responsive. That’s a headache for another day…!

AHA!

With the help of Caleb, and it’s not quite as straightforward as WOW to implement, I came up with this. Even brighter than your example! It’s not 100% there yet, but the client is happy to have it live as it stands and I can fiddle around with it at my leisure. WOW slider would have been fine for this, but as I had Hype I thought I’d use it and there’s the possibility of having some text floating over the top at some point in the future.

Hype, responsive and WebYep CMS all at once, my brain nearly popped! Honestly Neil, if I can do it, I’m pretty sure you’d handle it without much trouble.

Seems we’ve both been trying to achieve the same, I’m just dipping my toes into WebYep, just not had the time to try yet. That’s my goal, a responsive site with a small CMS!

Frustratingly I can’t view your site link due to web blocking tech here at the office, it only lets some sites through. Can’t even view my own site either. It lets FreewayTalk through, thankfully! I’ll check your link out when I’m back home.

Not had a chance to try the responsive options within hype yet, looking forward to giving them a go. Hype’s a very good product. Today i’ve been tasked with making a responsive email for my client. Now THATS a headache

This is where I take a step backwards.

All the very best to you.

A word of warning, if you have a look at the link I sent through before, make sure you have your sunglasses on!

Trevor there was a discussion here earlier about favourite fonts - can I just say that Patrick Hand in pink does not get anywhere close.

In use on this site I can only say that it comes a close second to Comic Sans as a No No!

David, I totally agree, but I was given instructions to follow.

It’s not a site I’m particularly proud of, but having my biggest client just go bust on me a few weeks ago, I’m willing to follow orders!

Help, I can’t get WOW Slider to work properly with Backdraft and Freeway Pro. I have copied the one column module and pasted it on my page, deleted the sample picture and the text and inserted the Crowbar action in the module. I then pasted the WoW slider HTML code before the Head in the page and aded the text mark-up to the crowbar action. When I preview the Slider it is positioned to the left as is the Header Module ideally I would like them to be centred but I can’t get them to centre. As I reduce the size of the browser window the slider is working fine and drops down to allow for the responsive menu but fails to resize, the right side of the slider crops off as I reduce the size of the browser window. I have uploaded the page to http://www.kingstongraphics.co.uk/test-site/firstresponsive.html has anyone any ideas what I am doing wrong?

The first problem (the one column module not centering) is due to the auto margin being removed. Select the oneWrapper element, and in the dimensions area of the inspector, set the margin to “auto”. Now it should be centered.

However, this won’t fix the scaling problem. Would you be so kind as to send me your WOW Slider document off list? From looking at the code, it’s being output with fixed width’s, and I want to investigate and find out why.
