[Pro] SSD Drive?

I’m considering upgrading my Mac Pro with an SSD. Just curious to find out if anyone else has done this and if they were pleased with the performance.

I’m also thinking about getting a new Mac Mini i7 with Apple’s new Fusion Drive for my wife. Apparently, that thing is smoking fast.

I recently put a 750GB Seagate Hybrid drive in my MBP 2011 replacing the
original 750 GB.

All I can say is it makes a whole world of difference, I have regained a
snappy Mac.

I cannot give you timings but I recon boot is about a third of the
original time.

I did upgrade to Mountain Lion at the same tine, so I cannot say the ML
made some of the difference?
I had a few weeks previously done a clean Lion install and migration,
which made a small difference to the speed, but nothing like the Hybrid
drive.

Not tried an Apple Fusion drive myself which I would guess would be
better optimised for Mac than a Seagate Hybrid, the Fusion having a
proper SSD drive ahead of the spinning one. But I’ve not seen any
comparisons.

I’m also thinking of a new MacMini, the spec seems to have been
bumped-up a lot compared to my early Core2 Duo from 2007 Max RAM 2GB!

Thanks for the reply pandit. May I ask which model Seagate you purchased?

New Mac Mini with 120gb SSD Extreme Pro from OWC (installed myself), original hardrive and 8gb RAM…recommended. It flies. Photoshop opens in a couple of bounces. Freeway very quick!

I upgraded my Mac Pro (2009) with a 120gig SSD a few months back, and like Pandion says it really makes a huge difference, my mac is much quicker overall and feels like a new machine.

I installed it into the spare optical drive as the correct connection is already there, plus it leaves your main bays free for older drives. 10 minute job. Can’t believe how quickly SSD’s are falling in price too…

Neil.
