[Pro] Styles - hange selected text changes whole paragrah

Not sure to explain this. So bear with me.

Example. I have a some lines of text. A list of items. Each item has a bold heading, then a description

ItemA: description
ItemB: description
ItemC: description

I’m trying to style the ItemA bit, as bold, the description as normal text. I can do this easily enough. However, I had a whole page of this, so I was trying to use the Styles option instead. Also, then if I changed my mind, I could alter all of the text by simply tweaking the Style.

So I created a Style for ItemA
Bold, verdana, 12, left allign.

And a 2nd style for the description
Verdana, 11, left allign

So, firstly I select ItemA and apply the style - this for some reason applies the style throughout the whole block of text! Why? If I then try and apply the 2nd style to the description, it applies that style to the whole block of text again, overwriting the first style application.

What is going on? Any ideas?

I can manually go through and apply the correct styles if I use the Inspector pallet, but this is laborious and means I cannot batch change them later. Would be nice to get it working properly.

Is it because all of the text is on the same line with Hard Line Breaks. So that it is confusing Freeway?

Title should read:

Changing selected Text Changes whole paragraph.

Apologies for the typo.

Hi Paul,

From your description, it sounds like you’ve set “left align” in your style specifically, which is a paragraph-level attribute. In the Styles palette, paragraph styles like this are marked with a paragraph symbol to the left of the name.

If you apply a style with a paragraph-level attribute then the whole paragraph will take on that styling.

I don’t think in this situation you need to have it set, so clear all the styling on the text by selecting it all and choosing “Remove Styling” from the Style menu, or clicking on “No Style” in the Styles palette. Now edit the styles you created (Edit > Styles…) and remove the alignment attribute.

When you apply the styles now, they should just be applied to the run of text you selected.

Hope this helps,

Stewart

Genius

Thanks for that super quick reply. I think that will cure it. I have been reading up about paragraph styles and was trying to understand how I could have applied one. What you’ve said makes total sense. I will check through, but I’m sure that is what is happening. I’ve always applied the paragraph setting when setting my Styles - and now I see why I shouldn’t.

Thank You

Paul
