[Pro] System font problem?

Hi everyone, a funny thing has happened.

I normally leave my Mac on the whole time, but I went away for a few days and shut it down. On starting up I’m having what I think is a system font problem - maybe a corrupted font?

The odd email signature, web page or HTML email has suddenly started displaying certain text as a letter ‘A’ within a square, it looks like the ‘A’ key from a keyboard or typewriter.

Trying to use YouSendit earlier today, all of the copy was the ‘square+A’, so I was unable to transfer that way.

Has anyone had this happen to them, or know of any workarounds - or if indeed it is a corrupt font, in which case where to find out which one and get a new one, given that my iMac came pre-loaded new with no discs.

Once again, any help appreciated, and thanks for your time reading this.

During the startup/shutdown sequence, the mac OS performs a few
housekeeping chores. There’s no harm leaving it on for long periods of
time, but a restart now and then couldn’t hurt.

Probably adding a conditioned power supply if you leave it on a lot is a
good idea.

As for your problem, I don’t know - restart it a few more times? Repair
permissions?

Thanks Ernie, tried all of those and still no luck.

The symptoms in the Apple discussion thread are similar, but not exactly the same. All of my Finder menus, folder and file fonts are fine, it’s various other 3rd party bits like the odd email signature, or as I mentioned earlier - YouSendIt was all garbled with [A]'s.
