Hi! I want to create a link to a new site which leaves the existing page on screen, and opens the new site in a new window above it. I thought using target _blank should do this, but in the above the original page disappears, and even the URL back arrow becomes inactive. I’d appreciate the simple solution!! Cheers, Paul
The URL back arrow becoming inactive is actually a sign that the target=_blank is working.
This is often raised as one of the usability nightmares associated with opening a new window, and I don’t recommend opening windows for this reason. If the user wants to open a link in a new window, there are browser- and platform-specific shortcuts for doing just that, and it puts the control in the user’s hands, where it belongs.
If you open a new window, that new window will have no history – you will have broken the “back” button. On Windows, the new window will (usually) completely cover the old window, and on a modern machine, it will happen so quickly that there won’t be any sense of motion – it won’t look like a new window, just a new page – so when the back button doesn’t work any more, the visitor will be more confused than ever, and won’t think to look down to the tray for an extra browser tab that they don’t remember opening.
If you’re afraid that your user won’t come back to your site, then concentrate on making your site or page more interesting. You won’t have any problems retaining visitors that way.

Thanks Dave and Walter. I have (foolishly?) set myself the task of doing a photographic website on each of Australia’s Cathedrals (About 50!). Because this will be a long project, I thought I would keep the sites independent, but with a separate ‘contents’ page. Perhaps it doesn’t matter: I can just put a link on each site back to the contents page and stay in the same window. Paul
