How can I increase my font size in Safari to make sure my inline layout is functioning properly? I tried using the CMD + option, but that just seems to magnify the page, not increase the size of the fonts.

There’s a setting in the View menu where you can enable Scale Text Only. Turn that on and revel in the disconnectedness of all things.
Many browsers nowadays zoom everything proportionally, but the problem you are trying to cope with is not someone deliberately zooming, rather your content length growing outside of your layout’s control.
