[Pro] Text Editor

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a text editor which won’t fall over when I throw a large file at it?

I mostly use Smultron, which I like, but it falls over every time I throw an e.g. 10mb mysql backup file at it.

I don’t need high end features, simplicity and clarity is more important.

Thanks
Hugh

BBEdit is a great text editor although TextWrangler might be able to do it, I know BBEdit definitely can.
Both products are from the same developer:

thanks, Mike!

Already have Wrangler somewhere…never liked it’s look, though, everything looks…err, spidery!! Smultron was big and bold.

Haven’t used BBEdit for years…maybe I’ll download and try that.

cheers

Brackets http://brackets.io is very nice and free. I’ve tried it with files of ~10k lines without problem. Of course Sublime and TextMate are capable, too.

Do you think that will work on SnowLeopard?..

Brackets? Hmmm, I would be surprised if it does. But I also don’t know what the system requirements are either.

BBEdit (or its free cousin TextWrangler) can deal with files of hundreds of megabytes size on a suitably RAM-enabled Mac. I routinely use it to search through server log files and database dumps. BBEdit is the oldest continuously-developed Mac application, has been for several years now. There is a version that will run on your Mac. Full stop. I am sure that if you find a Mac Plus in your attic, and can convince someone to (postal) mail you a floppy disk with the app on it, BBEdit 1.0 will run there, too.
