[Pro] Text standards?

Slowly building my web site as a responsive site I got to wondering what standards might exist for blocks of text. Not headlines or things like that but for areas of text that are information to be read. Are there default px sizes that folks use for different screen sizes… tablet, phone landscape, and phone portrait?

I wouldn’t say that there are default or standard text sizes, as there are a lot of variables (contrast, typeface, screen clarity) that can and will affect how “comfortable” your type feels on the page.

The best test would be grab your mobile device and see how the text feels. Hand the phone to an elderly person and a younger person and see how they react (while there aren’t very many elderly people who use smartphones, they do exist).

FWIW, I tend to lean toward a 18px font-size for large screens, and a 14px-16px font size for small screens. Your mileage may vary.
