[Pro] Transfer Freeway Website Content

Hello All,

I recently developed a website for someone using Freeway Pro on my iMac, but they have a Windows PC. Is there a way to transfer the content from the iMac to the Windows platform so the website content can be edited and maintained going forward on their Windows PC?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Stan Wright

You can just zip up the Site folder that you created in Freeway for this site and email it to them. There is no PC version of Freeway, of course, but Freeway produces regular HTML files, so any HTML editor can open them for editing. They can even open them in Notepad and edit them.

However, it also follows that there is no round-trip possible. If they want to take over editing the site themselves, then just send them the site folder – it contains everything the server needs to host the site. But if they make changes and send you back the folder, you can’t do anything with them within Freeway.

If you are interested in letting the client edit parts of the site, while retaining creative control over the layout, you might want to look at one of the many Content Management Systems available for Freeway. WebYep, Perch, Pulse, Expression Engine, the list goes on and on. Depending on your needs and your client’s level of skill and sophistication, there’s usually a way to solve this problem where it works for everyone.

Thanks to all for your quick reply. I think I’ll explore some of the Content Management Systems software solutions before deciding. My client is computer literate but not sophisticated enough to manage the layout and actions. I wanted to give them the ability to update the content files that are linked to the site and do the upload to publish the revised content.

I zipped the Site folder created in Freeway and transferred it to a Windows 7 platform. Now how do I open it and import its contents into a Windows-based web design software. I have been using a Windows-based program called WebEasy Pro, but so far I can’t seem to read or import the unzipped files. I’m probably showing my newness to all this but could use a few pointers. Thanks.

I dont know anything about WebEasy Pro but what you really need is an app that will edit the HTML files - and the most basic of these is a text editor. Dreamweaver is a more sophisticated one.

But to reiterate - this is a one way process. Once you have done this FW cannot read the changes you have made because they only exist in the output HTML files and not in the FW doc itself.

Not that this is what you’re looking for, but this is a decent free HTML editor for the PC and will let you preview your edits/files. This is for editing right in the HTML code, no WYSIWIG stuff.

They have a free HTML editor for the PC. You can at least download that, install it, and have a look at the files. I’m thinking that you’re thinking there is something that will open FW files just as you see them in FW on your Mac, and that’s not going to happen. You will only be able to open the HTML files directly, and like everyone is saying, once changes are made in those HTML files, your FW files will be useless. Or, at the minimum, you will have to make whatever changes THEY make in the FW file, if you want to upload anything.

If you are planning to turn this over to someone else just so they can update portions of the the site themselves, definitely investigate a content management system.
