[Pro] Use other software in addition to Freeway?

I’m curious whether those of you who use and like Freeway (pro or express) likewise use other web design programs. And if you do, under what kinds of circumstances would you go a different route?

  • One situation would be when taking over a non-FW site and the
prospect of rebuilding it in FW is not an option you’ll need something
that can open html/php files without a hitch.

  • If you’re working collaboratively on a project.

  • A more rare case may be if the client requires a certain level code
cleanliness, meaning no inline css or other code-related bloat then it
may be easier to use an app that allows you to more easily create or
at least clean-up the code base. You’ll probably only run into this
sort of thing if you’re doing work for a corporation who is wise to
such things and demands it (not uncommon). Some savvy individuals will
    expect it too.

I have been known to get Dreamweaver out - but it is mainly for one client who got someone else to redesign their site and then came back to me.

I use DW so that I can edit/update that site until its next FW redesign which I am sure will be by me now that they have been educated.

I dont particularly like using it but it fulfils a purpose meantime. I find it to have a very steep learning curve compared to FW.

These are the ones I use on either a regular basis or from time on time:

TexMate
TextWrangler
cssEdit
SimpleCSS
Coda
Dreamwaever
Espresso

TextMate I used everyday
and cssedit is also heavily used
the other are generally when I need to either: look at code that has been supplied or code I have generated.

all the best

Hi Laura,

Wordpress… there are many things Wordpress can do which will be hard in FW, but you will only find that out when you dive into Worpress. I am very excited about the possibilities of that CMS…

Wow. There are some programs mentioned here that I’m totally unfamiliar with. Freeway Pro has worked well for me with the small- to mid-sized clients I have, but especially for the smaller clients I’ve wondered if my task would have been simpler yet using something like iWeb. I’ve never touched that or, say, Rapid Weaver, but both appear to offer some faster solutions that Freeway.

I’ll have to keep all of this in mind should I get to the point where I need to consider alternatives. (As for Dreamweaver – ugh! I actually own an early version of Dreamweaver, one developed by Macromedia, but could never really wrap my head around it. And I don’t want to struggle that hard.)

Anyway, thanks, all. I consider this list primarily a trouble-shooting forum but also a place to learn about the web design field all around.

Familiarity breeds speed!

But if you want a run of the mill, template based site that is far from unique maybe.

… did we already have an external FTP-Client? My choice: Cyberduck. And for the Graphic Standpoint Photoshop and Illustrator. And a ton of “Helping and Inspiration” Sites like:

http://www.themeflash.com/50-best-photoshop-web-design-tutorials/

… only as small examples.

That stripe generator is really nice and I can see when it might come in handy. Great find! Thank you.

Other than Freeway - There are a couple of flash developer sites: wix.com and sitecube.com I’ve used. They have different strengths. Wix.com is more flexible but a bit wonky. It’s a reasonably inexpensive CMS with a flash-y result. Sitecube.com has some very nice features, but you have to use their templates. If one works - it’s great.

Other tools: PageSpinner, Fetch, Art Director’s Toolkit, ButtonBuilder, many other tools for audio and video.
