[Pro] Website testing workflow?

When you complete a new website what process do you go through to ensure everything is working properly before you show it to the client?

In other words, how many brands/generations of browsers do you test the site on or is their a service online that does that for you? Do you test it on Macs and PCs?

I test as I go. Kind of like spot checking. For me it’s usually something like:

IE 7+ / XP+
FF - last 3 versions on each platform
Chrome - last few versions on each platform
Safari, of course

iOS - last couple versions
Android - current version

It depends on the project and client, you know? I may vary the above for any number of reasons.

As Todd says, it depends on the client and project. However, I usually test these combos:

  • Safari 6, Chrome (latest), Firefox on OSX 10.8
  • IE8 and Chrome on Win XP
  • IE8, IE9, Firefox, and Chrome on Win 7 (VirtualBox and this)
  • IE10, Firefox, and Chrome on Win 8 (Also VirtualBox, you can download the Win 8 virtual machine here)
  • Safari on iOS 6 for iPhone and iPad (Xcode simulator, iPod Touch is on my wish list!)
  • Firefox, Android Browser, Opera, and Dolphin on various versions on Android

I’ve been known to make a run down to our local Best Buy at project completion to test it out on a wider range of devices (do you know that Kindles don’t support web fonts?), especially if the website is responsive or very mobile-friendly.
