I have a rather complex set of controls designed, and seek some guidance on avoiding gotchas.

The page is a template for a data-driven site. The idea is that in the upper right you will search for movie comments. A returned list will appear in the grey area on the right (list not shown). Selecting one from the list on the right will display that comment in the center. This email concerns the ‘filters’ on the left.
Once a search has been initiated, the user can filter the results by clicking the checkbox of several of the items on the left. Effectively, these are tags. Rolling over a tag gives some brief information about that tag. Clicking on the text of a tag loads a page that exhaustively discusses the concepts behind the tag. Simple.
Also, should a returned/viewed movie comment have additional tags that are not selected, these are shown by left-facing arrowheads.

Shows the various states of these tags. Obvious behavior are checkboxes and hover/select highlights. The left-facing solid arrow means that the text in the center has that quality. A right-facing arrow means that that one tag has the description displayed to the right.
As you can imagine, I want to design this right.
