problem modem

Can anyone offer any suggestions with this;
My speedtouch 330 USB powered modem which has worked fine for years started becoming stubborn to go online before stopping altogether a few days ago.I found i could only get online by switching the computer on first and then plugging the modem into the USB.I have scanner/printer/keyboard/mouse all attached to one USB port via a hub.
Tech` at Demon text chat said "it sounds like the modem is not getting enough power"and to try unplugging the printer & scanner. This worked.Ok.Solution but no answer and no printer and no scanner.

The text chat tech` also recommend the lastest speedtouch driver but this is for a macosx 10.4 and i have 10.5.5

Ok grinds teethso any ideas on what is going on…

Is it a powered hub, that plugs into the mains? If not, getting one
might solve it.

best wishes,

No it does not attatch to the mains its powered by the computer and has worked ok this way for years .Could you recommend a modem that is compatible with an emac running leopard 10.5.5 its looking like a bit of a crapshoot …even the one in the apple shop looks dodgy1.5 out of 5 of 14 reviews.

Most USB modems are bus-powered, meaning they take their power from
the USB connection. This is frequently only just enough, and other
devices also drawing power can tip you over the edge.

It could also simply be expiring of course.

I recommend getting an Ethernet ADSL (not cable) broadband router
rather than a USB modem. It will have the modem built in, and it will
manage the connection for you. No software is required whatsoever; it
is a regular network device, not something faking a network
connection over USB. You’ll regain a USB port, as it’ll connect via
Ethernet instead. You can also have other things connected if you
want to (unless you get one with only one Ethernet port).

Explicit Mac support isn’t generally necessary, Set it up with your
Mac connected, look in the Network part of System Preferences and
look in the Ethernet panel to see what the router IP address is, then
type that into your browser. That will connect you to the router’s
config page, where you can use whatever process is provided to
configure it with the right settings. Usually all this means is
typing your broadband connection username and password. Once in, it
will remember and make the connection whenever it is turned on. And
it will keep it alive too.

Ok thankyou for the input Thatkeith.I think it might well be ever so slowly expiring,as there is no reason i can find that it shouldnt be finding the power.

I hope its not the mac that`s going.Unthinkable.

Hey Bruce - I’ve got a 4 port router sitting here doing nothing. Assuming you’re in the UK, pay the postage and it’s yours. All you’ll need will be an RJ11 phone cable & an RJ45 network cable and you’re in business.

Hope this helps.
