Problems with styles - again

Hi chaps, desperately trying to get my head around styles … I followed a tute from Dan jasker to create a default ‘body’ style … but when I try and apply it to text I get an error “This style cannot be applied to text” - another problem I’m having, I want to adjust the kerning between two characters, when I put the cursor between them and adjust the space another new style is created and I cannot get rid of it - I find it really frustrating trying to ‘manage’ the styles. I’m afraid too often I just think bu$%£r it I’ll just carry on and let it create as many styles as it likes … any ideas anyone please ? Roger

Tag-only styles like “body” are omnipresent, they don’t get applied to
anything. They are just always “there”. The body style is picked up by
everything unless you specifically create another style to target
certain areas. Remember, there is a very specific hierarchy to the
html structure and understanding the “cascading” aspect of CSS is also
helpful.

Thanks Todd … I think I’m getting my head around it a little more - even in the few minutes since I posted - it just didn’t seem to work the way I thought it should but I see a little better how it works - good of you - Roger - still cannot work out how to kern between 2 characters though …

Think of the styles describing the web document text to another viewer.

Change from normal to italic and Freeway automatically creates the style for you to span the word italic to display it to others.

Freeway takes care of all this for you so you don’t have to worry. Although by hand naming styles and applying them you can cut down on styles clutter and make better sense of them.

As for kerning individual html letters I would stick to kerning whole words or sentences (headlines). And note that what letters you see kerned in Safari will look different in FireFox.

And different again in IE - all flavours.

Oh what fun, thanks chaps, I have a graphic script font and the cap at the beginning of the word is miles from the main bit of the word … I tried adjusting the kerning in photoshop and copying and pasting but when pasted it defaults to it’s basic ‘spacing’ - pity that - if I adjust the spacing/kerning of the whole word all the other characters are squigged up so no good, I guess I must live with the new ‘style’ which, as mentioned, just adds to the clutter … hey ho a new week … Roger

Roger,

If you are using a string of graphic text, just click between the two letters in question and in the inspector palette and into “space:” enter “-10%” or whatever you need.

Or are you mixing HTML text and Graphic text on the same line?

Thanks David, yes I’d worked out the way to do it (as you described) but it generates a new ‘style’ and I’ve been trying to tidy up my styles list … I guess I’ll have a new style called “-10% spacing” - best Roger
