PSD / background removal

Give HueShifter a try. You will find it on www.bergdesign.com. It does an amazing and much better job than Photoshop when it comes to selective color correction.

WB in Photoshop is super easy, but you must first understand that THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS WHITE IN THE NATURAL WORLD. So if the un-natural electronic white of the screen is what you want to balance your image to, then expect grief.

It sounds as if the original post the client wanted the image clipped-out, or “floated” on an all-white bg. This is also tricky as the image edges against the blue-white of electronic white can display chromatic aberration, and often the clipped image must be adjusted towards the blue end. I would favor non-destructive masking solutions (clipping paths, adjustment layers) or re-shooting the jewelry with better color-control of the lighting and background.

However, if you are just correcting for color-cast from indoor or poor light quality, my favorite method in PSD involves using the Levels Adjustment Layer. In the Layers pane, choose the WP dropper and double-click it to set the WP color to a Neutral White - C:5 M:3 Y:3 K:0 - and then click the dropper onto a portion of the image that should be neutral white. This will skew the entire image color, usually only leaving small contrast adjustments, if any.
