different from a blockquote – any thoughts?

It’s a visual enhancement only, not a semantic one like a blockquote which, as a structural element, would duplicate content and in the case of a screen-reader would not make sense … semantically.

Or think of it this way: the goal or purpose is not to alter the structure of the paragraph by adding yet another structure to it. It may seem odd but it actually serves a semantic purpose in the end.
